It's an old-school thing. I am not of fan of thumrests/tugbars or the covers. To each their own though.

I believe that is a finger hold to rest your hand while you use your thumb. Odd placing.

Just a bit more on this topic if I may.

I have used a thumb rest positioned 1.25 inches above the E string in the 'mellow' area on my 1987 Fender ® Power Jazz Bass Special. Unlike some other techniques that place the thumb on the E string while not using it, I find that it is more comfortable to use a thumb rest "north" of the E string in most cases - especially during long sets. If I need the E string silenced, I can very quickly move my thumb off the rest and onto the string without changing my finger position. Works very nicely.

I started to use the bridge pickup as a thumbrest. I usually rested my thumb on the neck pickup, but after I lowered it, there wasn't enough space to keep my thumb on, because it went into the body. Later, I was learning a Jaco P song ("Come On, Come Over") and I started to use the bridge pickup extensively and that's the only way that I play now, except when slapping.

It's very comfortable for me and I have more precision when it comes to playing each string. I get a nice Jaco sound when I use only the bridge pickup and an awesome deep sound when I play on the bridge pickup while having only the neck PU turned on.

I use the pickup to rest my thumb on too. I can't see using my thumb to play with- unless I learn to slap (which I haven't been able to master quite yet).

Just in case anyone wishes to try one of these after market rests, one of the least expensive and most popular is from AllParts in Houston, Texas.

Their part number AP-0621-023 Bass Thumbrest is what is installed on both of my basses and I'd be lost without them for my playing style...
