hey guys
i've got a fender 2004 MIM jazz bass, it was my first bass but i was an incredibly fast learner and was always practicing, i'm doing gigs now probably about 2 nights a week now semiprofessionally.
to be honest my bass has been good but it's had its wiring changed 4 times and the nut replaced twice and i'm wondering whether paying for these repairs is worth it? :?
does anybody have any recommendations for a good, reliable, replacement bass? (preferrably a jazz bass :D lol)
cheers

It all depends on you price range. If you want to stay with Fender, I've read glowing reviews on the new American Standard Jazz basses. Or you can step it up to a American Deluxe model which is active. Even some of the MIM Jazz basses are great to go with, like the Classic '60s Jazz which I can say from personal experience are great basses for the money. Or the new MIM '70s Jazz which I read many good review on.

Now if you want to go to the other side of the scale, then look at Lakland basses (the Daryl Jones model is a great playing bass), Mike Lull or even to Sadowsky like I have.

I recommend the American Standard Jazz and Precision basses.
The 2008 models really have the vintage vibe, tone and sustain and I love the sound and feel of them.
I think Fender is now making the best basses in their history and I would recommend that every bass player get one of the new models rather than chasing an over priced 70's model that has lots of problems.
The new basses are an incredible value and they will last the rest of your life!

I'd also recommend the new Js and Ps, having had a chance to try a few now. I have an MIM 5 string J (2007) that's decent but not quite at the level of the new MIAs I've been trying. I don't play a lot of 5 string, so as my backup, the MIM is perfect.

Being more a P-bass type (I also have a 1998 fretless P), I'd be more likely to get an 08 P, but that's me. Either way though, you're getting a great quality semi-pro (at least) instrument with the MIA options. Beyond that (and this was mentioned in Bass Player a few issues back as well), you can't get much better without going into high end custom basses.

I have to tell you, MIM or not, there should have been no reason to go through 4 re-wires and two nuts. I have basses from the 70's that have never been re-wired or had nuts replaced. I would question the luthier that has been repairing your bass.

Having said that, I reall like the new MIA Jazz and P basses. I am a big fan of the '62 Reissues and if you don't have a ton to spend, Fender has a Classic '60's Jazz Bass in 3-tone sunburst or white that has all of the 60's goodies on it except the pup covers. It is about $750. Take a look at it at Sweetwater. Musicians Friend and GC do not carry it.

+1
The American Standard basses are really nice, and at this time of year you should be able to get one for a good price.
