1) Will tuners like these: http://www.vintage-guitars.se/1971_Fend ... tuners.jpg fit on my 1993 Mexican Jazz Bass headstock? I would like to buy them for my bass but I don't know if the holes for the screws will be in the right place.

2) Does Fender make a re-edition of the tuners in the picture above? I don't want to shell out $300 for tuners taken off a '60's-70's bass, I just want the look.

Thanks!

Do yourself a favour and save your money.
Get yourself a set of schaller tuners which are A1 tuners, dont even think about buying vintage tuners as your guitar will sound no different than the schallers.
Think about whether your bass is worth upgrading or not, how long have you been playing etc etc.
I used to own a MIM Jazz and thought it was brilliant as it was, the only reason i sold it was because i prefered my precision.

I know the guitar won't sound different. I want to change the tuners because I like how they look and because of a project that I'm doing (see other topic). I already have Schallers on my bass.

So I'm asking if those vintage, Fender made tuners (re-issue) would fit on my MIM '93 JB headstock. I would like to know if they will fit the screw holes.

Thanls.

Panek,
The vintage tuners will not have the same screw pattern as the Mexi tuners on your bass. You will have to drill new holes in the bass neck to hold on the vinatage tuners.
Check www.allparts.com for some vintage styled tuners that may cover the existing screw holes in the back of your bass neck. I beleive that they cost less than $300US, probably about half of that much.

good luck,

BCbassman

Panek,

Ok, here is the story. The real problem is not the screw hole pattern, it is the bushing hole diameter. Typically, the bushing hole in the headstock will be 9/16". The Fender/Gotoh vintage style tuners will be 11/16" diameter and the process of enlarging the hole by 1/8" is tricky at best. I explained how to do it in a previous post also titled "tuners".

After the bushing hole size, now we can talk about the screw hole pattern. Like the previous posters have mentioned, you will probably have to drill new holes. Take off your old tuner and measure the hole distances to see if the new tuners will cover the old holes. Nothing uglier than looking at a new tuner with the old holes peeping out from around them. I know for a fact that the Vintage '62 tuners will cover the old holes. These look great and have the riveted clover leaf. You can see them here. Please note that these are REVERSE tuners and will turn the opposite way you are used to for tuning.

Fender Vintage - $100.00

Gotoh Vintage - $75.00
http://guitarpartsresource.com/bass_tunersgotohv.htm

The Gotoh come in the '70's style as well as you can see on the links above.

Now here is the thing. My understanding is that Gotoh makes the Vintage '60's for Fender so you can get the Gotoh and they will be the same.

Also, if you do need to drill more holes, take caution. Mark the drill bit depth with tape and lube the threads of the screws with wax or soap. Rock maple will strip the screw head or snap those small screws.

Hope this helps,
JBH
