Anywhere from $80 and up. The last time I had it done (to a Jazz 24) it ran me around $110. But he did an excellent job. Once he pulled the frets he trued the fingerboard, modified the nut and placed maple strips where the fret were.

According the price list of my guitar tech (just looked), his charge for a fretless conversion and setup is $158. I'm in LA, so that could be a price factor. But at the same time, I know this guy would do a flawless job of the conversion.

IMHO don't do a conversion. Buy a fretless neck. Its too expensive to do the conversion when you consider what you are doing to the value of your bass.

Its much cheaper to get an aftermarket neck, licensed by Fender, that will fit your bass and scratch your fretless itch.

Then, when you want to buy another dream bass, you reinstall the fretted neck and get top dollar for your bass because it is original and unmodified!

just my .02
