I'm just trying to figure out if I want to go the active route or not. All I know for sure is that the Fender classic 60's pups aren't putting out enough power for my taste. I'm aware of set ups, strings, etc. The luthier thats doing my neck/fret job suggested both the Fralins and the EMGs as an idea. Does anyone have any experience with the Fender 60's custom shop jazz bass pickups?

sorry to say that i dont... however i have Sadowsky pickups and electronics in one of my basses and absolutely love them... they are extremely hot and absolutely SILENT i tried to get noise out of them and couldnt... also, they are no more expensive than the EMGs or the Fralins (both of which would still be great choices)

Well, my experiance with Active was short lived. I was buying alot of 9 volt batteries and seeing that you might be talking 18V, thats two per switch and being that I always believe in being prepared, it got too be a change at any lenghty gig. Just a thought, maybe you should look into different amps. My '64 has the vintage Jazz pups and with the Mesa they have more then enough punch and low end. I also recently went with roundwounds and that makes a big difference too. :D

What I'm trying to accomplish is this. I'm looking for more oomph or volume. More volume from the bridge pup. More volume from the D and G string from the 6 to 7th fret up. Ive always used round wounds, and everything is adjusted properly.

Passive :!:

I have not met a 9V,18V,24V on-board battery system that can hold a candle to a quality preamp, via the mixer board (desk for the English folks) and/or outboard preamp (Demeter, Groove Tubes, Manley, Langevin, Demeter, Groove Tubes, etc...). A battery is dying from the minute you plug it in...not a variable I will deal with. Not to mention the lack of headroom & the quality of the components in comparison to the studio quality counterparts.

I love my passive Fender bass with nice new strings plugged into a studio quality preamp or mixing console of choice.

I have one of each....a custom Active Jazz bass, and kept one passive.

My 2005 American was customized a bit to make room for my Audere Preamp. I wanted one with the tone knob, so I needed to created a new place for the output jack. I decided to go with the strat-style jack plate placed strategically on the side. The compartment is a little tight, but the battery should last about a 1000 hours.

Next is my 2007, which has all the new features; however, I added some Dimarzio Model J's to alleviate the hum, which I have in the 2005 as well.

Both basses also have Hipshot D tuners.

Later Fellas
