I have a highway 1 jazz. I wanted to replace the white pickguard w/ a tort. I could not find one with the truss rod cut out at the base of the neck, so I broke down and bought one w/out. my question, what would be the best way to cut out the notch on my pickguard for the truss rod, w/out causing damage to the pickguard itself?

I have done it with a rat tail file, but the best way I did it was with a Dremel tool and a small rotary drum sander bit.

You can cut out the notch for the truss rod adjustment but If I were you, I would leave the pickguard alone and just take the pickguard off when you want to adjust the neck. How often do you adjust your truss rod?

The look of a vintage tortoise shell guard will be changed if you cut out the modern truss rod cavity. Plus if you ever get another USA jazz bass that is an older vintage, and you want to put the tort guard on it- the guard won't look right with the cut out.
Just something to consider.

If you have sharp, strong teeth, you can just take a bite out of it.

Dremel FTW.
