I bought a MM bass and am not happy with the tone on the high end. The treble cut/boost seems to have very little effect on the tone. I sent it back to have it repaired and was told they replaced the board, but it still sounds the same. Is this just normal for the MM bass, or is there some magic dust I need to sprinkle on it? Thanks.

You thought it may have been defective and it was not, so you are still unhappy with it. Take it back. That's too much money to waste to not be happy. JMO

Sorry bout the thread hijack but what's the deal with the chrome piece right over the neck pickup? I know you can take it off but if most do take it off what's the point of it in the first place?

From what I've read, it is cosmetic. But Marcus Miller says he uses it as a palm rest when he is slapping. Go figure.

precisley what its there for, or atleast in mine and marcus' opinion.
i mean, have you played slap bass almost none stop for 20 minutes or more and your wrist not ached 'cos its not anchored?
it kills, especially when your on touring/gigging and playing many nights a week.

personally i dont know what is wrong with the bass, not alot has been said about it other than high end problems- EQ wise.
i havent owned one but ive played the MM4&5 many times along with american 4's and 5's and never came across such a problem like this.

Keep posting though and let us know what happens with it.

 Well I must be playing slap wrong cuz that thing would be totally in my way. Played with one at GC for a while, didn't notice the problem about the high end just that that chrome piece was in the way. That bass is BOOMIN. Jazz on steroids.

The chrome cover also hide the fact that you have a Dark Star pickup under there :-)
I have also read that the control cavity is mot properly shielded either.

I hate to be the bearer of "Bad News, but the tone in that you have in your MM5 is the tone in all of them which is terrible, and the stock preamp that it comes with is total "Garbage IMO,however with that being said I replaced the stock pickups with Seymour Duncan 70/74's (I had Jason Lollars in it) and just took the preamp out completely and made it a passive Bass and sounds like real nice 70's bass now,but with the MM5 costing almost $1900.00 dollars it needs to be better than what it is now.
