Hello there, fellow Fender fans.

I own a 1993 Fender Jazz Bass, Mexican. The guitar is simply awesome. The are only two issues I have with it: the ugly "Made in Mexico" sign and the tuners.

I would like to build a replica of Klaus Flouride's bass (of the Dead Kennedys), which is a 1966 Jazz Bass (Lake Placid Blue with matching headstock). The base for this project would be, of course, my 1993 Mexican Jazz Bass. I have a few questions and perhaps some of you are "in the know".

Now, I want to do a replica of a 1966 Jazz Bass, WITHOUT using 1966 parts, which I cannot afford. I am simply going for the look.

1) Where can I find someone who can paint my Olympic White bass in a Lake Placid Blue colour? Including the headstock. I am looking for some business that has good reputation, and I can mail them my specs, send the bass away and expect it coming back to me looking all LP Blue. It is essential for me that this company would use the same paint and/or techniques that were used on 1960's basses (I don't think that would be too expensive).

2) I am looking for a place where I can buy a Fender Jazz Bass decal for my headstock. I'm looking for the style of decal used on 1966 basses (I have seen that in the years that Jazz Basses were produced, the style of the decal has changed - including the Fender logo) I am also looking for someone (maybe some business in the US or Canada) who can professionally apply that decal onto the headstock without messing it up. I could try, but I don't want to ruin it.

3) Will the classic, 60's style, old, big, badass Fender tuners (or machines, pegs - however you like to call them), easily fit on a Mexican headstock?

4) I have also searched here and there for a replacement neck. I want an affordable (less than USD300) Jazz Bass neck made in the US. Nothing fancy, no signature model, just a regular neck, could be without the tuners. Can anyone point me to the right place where to find one? eBay has the Japanese or Mexican ones. I want one made in the US.

My bass itself is just awesome, I really enjoy it, it's the best bass I've ever had in my life - but I have fallen in love with that one trashed Jazz Bass owned by Mr. Flouride, and would like to replicate the look (minus the dings, which will probably come by naturally).

Thanks

That will be really tough to get.

Otherwise the project you are looking to undertake could get a bit pricey.
Also, I must assume you are experienced with removing and the re-applying finishes. What about keeping your beloved bass as is, then look for a reissue Fender bass from that period.

Wrong color, but in the ballpark.

If I only had the money to buy a 60' Reissue bass, I wouldn't say that I have a MIM Jazz Bass, nor would I look how to transform one into a 1966 JB ;)

The project is still very distant. Right now, I am trying to build some sort of a "battle plan" to see how much everything would cost. I'd love to keep it under 700-1000 US dollars. I need to see what's more affordable - the project, or just buying a Lake Placid Blue Reissue bass (if they make 'em in that colour of course).

To do your project bass you will have to spend some money, but with some good planning and some luck, you may be able to find a bass close to what tyou want to use as your platform bass from a Mexican Reissue bass.
I don't know where you are located but if you are in the USA, you should be able to find a Mexican reissue Jazz bass for $650 at Guitar center.
On the used market you should pay less. It is always cheaper to buy an entire bass as opposed to buying parts and building from scratch.
There is a site called reranch.com that sell finishing supplies and instructions as to how to refinish a bass the way Fender did in the 1960s.
I don't know how much you can do yourself, but that is the way to keep down costs. It also can end up costing you more if you screw it up, so be honest about your abilities.
Good luck with your project.

I can do it myself - I've already done it with one bass. I stripped down the paint, applied a new sunburst and a new lacquer finish. It came out very nice for my first guitar project and still looks great. Prior to this I had experience with woodwork. Also I have all the necessary equipment (but time may be an issue). I don't think doing a Mexican Fender would be that different ;)

This is my final battleplan:

1) Buy supplies at reranch.com
2) Strip down the paint from the body
3) Strip the lacquer finish & decal off the front of the headstock
4) Paint body in Lake Placid Blue or Sherwood Green & apply lacquer finish
5) Apply new paint (matching headstock), vintage decal and lacquer finish to headstock front
5) Replace parts: new vintage tuners, new pot knobs, new strings (Rotosound), new neckplate (with the letter F), new pickguard (with holes for the thumbrest and neck pickup cover)
6) Find measurements for the screws for the bridge cover.
7) Apply stickers.

Voila!

Now, I know that buying a MIM '60's reissue would make this project easier. But I don't have another $600 to shell out for another bass. I'd rather shell out that $600 for this project. I have the ability to do this on my 1993 MIM bass. I know that it will be a lot of work to not only find everything I want for this project and then do it, but I am sure in the end it will come out fine.

ReRanch.com's guides will be GREAT help with this thing.

Now, I have two more questions:

1) Can someone tell me where can I find a good place to get a replica vintage Fender Jazz Bass decal? Does anyone sell them? Can I make one myself? I need a design like this:
http://stuff.klausflouride.com//gallery/34/s20/media/8732_klausphoto.jpg

2) Pardon my inexperience, but exactly what color is this bass?
http://stuff.klausflouride.com//gallery/34/s20/media/8745_klausphoto.jpg
I'm thinking Lake Placid Blue, but on some pics and videos it looks kinda green (like Sherwood Green).

Thanks for helping. Any comments, advice, constructive criticism? Don't hesitate to write.

Any Decal you buy online will be illegally produced and I don't know how the site masters feel about me recommending that you go on line to look for a decal. I have heard of fender supplying decals to repairmen that are restoring old Fender basses but I don't know if they will give or sell a neck decal to someone building a replica of a '66 Jazz bass from a Mexican made standard Jazz bass. That decal is the mid sixties design that is used on the reissue JAzz as well as many Relic/custom shop basses. Fender definitely makes\has them but you are putting it on a lesser quality bass and that could be a problem. I don't know if they will give you a Decal but it doesen't hurt to try.

The color of that bass is Lake Placid Blue. The clear laquer coat will yellow over time and that is why many older LPB basses look green.
Reranch will give you the finish components to dulpicate this finish and bring it to a shade of green, if that is what you want.
BTW - that original picture is of a 66 jazz with a bound neck and dots on the finger board. This was a trasitional neck only made for a short time through 1966. Fender soon went to the block inlays and bound neck on the Fender Jazz bass. Good luck with your project.

This simply isn't the place to be discussing replica Fender decals for reasons that I would presume should be obvious. Please steer this conversation off of that topic or I'll have to lock this thread -- thanks!

Wow, I never knew that getting a Fender decal would be illegal (seriously, I did not). Sorry, I totally do not want to break any rules (or the law!) here, so we'll drop this topic.

BCbassman: What I'm trying to do is a replica in a replica. First thing will be making a lookalike of that 1966 transition model (dots on the fingerboard, bound neck), and after that, making it look like Klaus Flouride's bass (minus the wear and tear). That means doing it in Lake Placid Blue, including the matching headstock. But the look I would like to do myself is "new" - the guitar will get it's own "used and abused" look over time ;)

I understand your position and I would not want to do or encourage anyone to do anything illegal.

Brad,
Is there any way for an enthusiast to obtain a Fender neck decal for such a project from FMIC?

Thanks,
Bill

I believe there are details on this web site. In a nut shell, you must be able to provide Fender proof that it is a genuine Fender product (via serial numbers, photos, etc). And they will only give you a replacement decal, what was originally on the bass. So they would not give you a MIA '62 RI JAzz bass decal for a MIM Standard jazz.

I love a good project, especially when its one that others are skeptical of the possibility of completing it, let alone producing something of value. That being said, I have one question:

Why is the Made in Mexico decal ugly?

Because it doesn't say "Made in USA", hehe ;)

It's nice, except I think the "Made in Mexico" and the serial number should be somewhere on the back of the headstock. The silver Fender logo is very nice. I like how they've kept this style on all Mexicans. It's way better than that bigger, "expanded" Fender logo they use now (see the new American Standard/Deluxe models to get what I'm saying). At least I think it's on all Mexicans - I've been to a music store yesterday and all the MIM's had the same style Fender logo.

Don't get me wrong, this bass sounds awesome. 15 years (16 now) and it has aged quite nicely. Before buying it, I read some good reviews about early production Mexican basses (this one is from '93 judging by the serial number). Definitely a nice instrument, not too banged up and working fine. My project is just transforming it's appearance, the soul will stay the same ;)

Meanwhile, here's something I overlooked when researching materials for my project. MIM's have the truss rod screw coming out at the headstock, meanwhile 60's Jazz Basses have it at the heel of the neck. Damn, problems everywhere. So now I either go with it anyway or look for a new neck.

EDIT: Upon closer inspection it seems that it will be unnoticeable when the headstock is painted Lake Placid Blue, so no worries here after all ;)

EDIT 2: Now the biggest problem is working on fitting the Vintage tuners (see "Tuners" topic), I'll have to talk to some people to get an idea on how and with what to do it.

Wow! That is an awesome resource. I have no idea why I've never checked it out. Thanks! :)

Another question: did Fender basses in the '60's (we're talkin' 'bout the transition 1966 Jazz Bass) have the big "F" letter on the neckplate, or was it just a generic, chromed one with the serial number, but no letter?

yes. by mid-1965, the large "F" logo was stamped in the center of the four-bolt neck plate. The serial number was located between the two top screws as it had been since 1954. This style of neck plate continued until 1976 on the precision bass. check this out: (1966 Pictures!!)

happy new year to everybody :D

here is also a very interesting book "The Fender Bass" (an illustrated history)
