I've also posted this on the Custom Shop Forum not knowing which was more appropriate.

I recently traded for a Fender Custom Classic Jazz bass. After more than 20 years of playing, it's my first Fender. I'm enjoying it quite a bit. My other main bass is a Stingray and the two contrast each other very nicely.

I don't see many of these basses around and was curious about them.

1. What type of pickups are on the bass (other than just "noiseless")?

2. Any comments on the preamp?

3. What makes this bass a custom shop? Is it really that much different than an American Deluxe Jazz?

4. Any other general comments would be appreciated.

I'm not sure why there aren't more around other than the new price being that much higher than Fender's American series. That price point gives it some stiff competition. Used, they seem a great value.

Thanks for any help,
LeonD

What a really nice "first" Fender bass :!: :!: :!:

Here is a detailed link for your Custom Shop bass.....

http://www.fender.com/customshop/instru ... 0157400839

The price point does give the custom shop instruments competition, but there is that distinctive Fender sound that the competition can either imitate or find there own sound (which is welcomed).

From the FCS website:

But by late 1986, Fender was ready. Dan Smith, then marketing vice president, recalled that during the early ’80s, “We looked at various ways to elevate Fender's image from the ‘working man's guitar’ to that held by some of the most respected boutique builders.”

Also:

The Fender Custom Shop’s people are hand-selected, uniquely trained individuals with unparalleled excellence and experience in the company’s main production lines and some of the world’s most prestigious instrument shops. Each builder is trained and then trained again, and each one is constantly learning new techniques,....

Basically you got the boutique Jazz Bass made by the best Fender has to offer. You can see the Custom Shop's RS&D has nicely trickled down to the new American Standard...vast improvement with the basses. But you don't need to look any further, you own a Fender Custom Shop bass.
:D

It was at best ok to me. To be honest wit you I was expecting A LOT more than what it offered as far as tone and volume which I found to be rather soft ,and for what it cost it should be better than what it is.

That's dissappointing to hear.
