I just purchased a used Jaco Artist bass, there are some differences between the website and mine. There is no ground strap from bridge to the bridge pickup, the body appears to be a three piece, when looking at the face of it, the picture on the site seems to be a one piece, the side dot markers are supposed to be centered between the fretlines, mine are right on the fret lines. Also I'm not able to determine the year of the bass with regards to the serial number. If someone knows about these basses please let me know what I actually have here.

First, none of Fender's bodies are one piece. Even my American Deluxe FMT Jazz is at least two pieces.

Also, are you sure that is a Jaco Artist? It does not sound like it to me. I've never seen any Fender fretless that had the side dots on the fretlines and had fretlines. Usually if it is a un-lined neck, like some of the older Japanese models or the Tony Franklin P-Bass, the dots are placed were the frets would be.....but only every other fret. My Japanese Fender jazz fretless which looks very much like the Jaco model, has a lined neck and the dots are placed just like a standard neck.

If it is a "real" Jaco model, it should say it on the neck plate. And it would be a USA made bass.

As far as the ground strap, a previous owner could have removed it. But from what you are describing, this bass does not sound like a true Jaco model.

So please answer some of the my comments in my previous post and I'd be glad to help.

Like, does it have the Special Jaco Tribute Neck Plate?
Does it sport chrome P-Bass control knobs?
Also does it have Vintage Style Reverse Tuning Machines ?
Does it say Made in USA?

Also it should have a 60's type logo (like in the photo of the Jaco bass here on the Fender site).

The headstock should look allot like this (logo and tuners)

Image

That is the headstock of my '62 RI Jazz fretless (Japanese model)

If you could post some photos, that would help too.

But, from what you described. The neck does not sound right. More like some after market neck.

It has the neck plate, and P bass knobs, and the reverse tuners. It does NOT say "Made in the U.S."

bassclef, can you show me a picture of the back of your neck and the side dot markers. I have no way of getting a picture of mine on the computer.

Also, below the Fender name is the patent numbers, there 4 or 5 of them.
Why would someone remove the ground strap? That would mean drilling a hole through the body to the under part of the bridge in order to install another ground wire...weird.

The logo sounds right. The Japanese Fenders do not have the patent numbers on the logo, as you pointed out in my photo.

I do not have a side photo, but if I was playing the bass right now what I would see is:

I would see the fret lines that are inlayed into the neck, in the same locations as metal frets on a fretted bass.

I would also see the side dots, between the fretlines starting on "G" (between the 2nd and 3rd fret line), then at the "A" position (between the 4th and 5th fret line), then "B", etc.

At the 12th fret there are two dots between the 11th and 12th fret lines. Then it starts all over again, a dot between the 14th and 15th fret line ("G")

Your neck should look close to this photo (of a Victor Bailey Jazz, but note the fretlines and the dots)

The side dots are right on the fret lines, that are inlaid. The dots start at the third fret then fifth and so on, at the twelvth fret the two dots are straddling the fret line.

If I call Fender , do you think that they would actually help? I haven't been able to get through because of the holiday.

Yea, that does not sound right. I was just looking at some photos of other Jaco basses on another forum, and none had a neck like you describe.

I've been playing fretless bass for years, and the only time I've seen dots placed in actual fret positions is on un-lined fretless necks. The neck on the Jaco bass is a standard '62 re-issue neck, which has dots on the finger board and on the side in between the frets.

In your case is sounds it sounds like someone had a un-lined neck and then added the lines for what ever reason. Then is would make sense that the dots are where they are.

Between that issue and the missing ground strap, that bass does not sound legit I am sorry to say. Pull off the neck is one place to look. If it is a after market neck and body, it might say the manufacturer.

Also, I just found this photo of a USA Jaco model that someone was seelling. Note it clearly shows the ground strap and the correct position of the side dots.

It turns out that the dots on the neck were put there on a few basses only, it's an 07, there was some kind of communication problem when these few necks were made. The ground strap is supposed to come in the package with the other accessories, not installed.

That's what they told me at the factory.
