I have been using steel wound rotosound strings (45-65-80-105) up till now and I don't have a clue wether these are good or not. I'd like to try some other ones, to compare them with the ones I have, but I don't know what to buy... I play an aerodyne jazz bass. Can anyone tell me what I schould look for or should I just pick a set and find out what I like most?

Stay with the Roto's. I still find them the best on my Jazz and I have been trying different strings for 35 yrs.

Rotosound are good strings. I used Rotosound Strings until around 20 years ago, then the founder of DR Strings; Mark Dronge sent me a set of stainless steel round core roundwound Hi-Beams. The consistency issues (dead strings out of the pack) where over. Plus now that a play V, I can't find a better contra B. I now have switched to the DR Marcus Miller Signature Set. I have found they have little more low mid. This adds some punch to the sound. You would think this set would be geared towards a slap sound. I have found it is just a really balanced all-around round-wound sound.

They are bright but with harshness. The amount wonderful overtones was partially induced by the fact the core was round, not hex. I am pretty sure the Fender Super Bass strings have a round core, though they are nickel plated (also a very nice sounding string).

Strings like tone is subjective, trail in error is the only way to really know. This is just an opinion from experience. But if it sounds like it is in the ballpark, you could save some time & money.

Hello bluzzy8

Couple of notes...

The come in many flavors...if you like the Rotosound vibe stick to the stainless steel types.

Also, if you purchase a round core (in any brand), please follow the directions included in the pack. You will need to bend the string, then cut them slightly after the bend, otherwise they could unravel. Lastly, don't tug the strings or stretch them...just tune them up and play them for while...they will settle in. Otherwise you could easily separate the core...hence killing the string, sonically or physically.

I am in 100% agreement with you contrabassist. DR strings for me all the way. I've tried just about every string that's out there but DR with my basses seem to have the sonic signature that works for me. They also seem to last longer than other brands.

I agree with the DRs. I played Rotos and switched to DRs on a whim and have never looked back. I went through the Hi-beams and Low-beams, but two years ago tried the Sunbeams, which I originally bought for my fretless. They are now on all of my Jazz basses and I absolutely love them. Try the Sunbeams in medium light gauge. Damn they are fine.

Today, after many years of Labella flatwounds, I put a set of DR Marcus Miller Fat Beams on my baby. I will miss not having to change my strings. I have to admit the double stops sound better. Hmmmm...this will be interesting. RIP Labella.
