I have a 2000 '62 reissue jazz bass. I am looking to take the buzz out the highest b-flat fret to three steps up to the d-flat on the g string, they will not even sound a note. Does any body know what material these frets are made of and what size crowning file I should use if I go that route.
Thanks

doledeep,

I am pretty sure that it is a nickel silver alloy and medium crown width. I am not positive on the crown height. Below is a link to the Stew Mac website showing all of their medium gauge wires and the different crown heights.

One word of caution. If you have never done this before, when eliminating the buzz from just several frets, you can end up chasing the buzz down the neck while moving it from fret to fret. Personally, what I do is tape off the fingerboard between the frets in question and several frets on either side of them. Then I take a black permanent marker and color the tops of the crowns of the frets. I then level until the tops of the frets are clean of permanent marker, recrown and sand/polish out the file marks. If you don't have diamond crwowning file, try and get one. The work left to do after a diamon crowing file is minimal.

Good luck.
