Guys,

I think I have outgrown my Ibanez starter kit and end up playing the GL every time I go to GuitarCenter. Unfortunately I haven't seen a 70s JBass in Dallas. Man I wish the GL came in more colors. I would be grateful if anyone could enlighten me with the differences, other than the $300 or so.

Many thanks, Jeff[/url]

The Geddy is made in Japan, has a maple neck with painted on block inlays, the finish is very nice, even using heavier roundwound strings like Rotosounds probably won't harm the neck.

The '70's is Mexican, has a rosewood neck with real block inlays.

I've played Geddy's but, not the '70's, no one in Pittsburgh has them. The Geddy is a sweet bass, slim neck, nice weight, easy to play and the badass bridge is great.

As I've said in a lot of other posts, try them all, you won't find two basses that play the same, wherever you shop, make them bring some out of the back, what the hell, it's your investment that you'll have for a long time.

Good luck.

oxfan,

Thanks a bunch for you response. I actually already took your advice before I read it! Lo and behold at my GC this very afternoon I stopped in and was able to sit down and play a GL, a 70s J Bass and the newly discounted Am St J Bass (evidently they had 70s J Bass in both colors in the back and all I had to do was ask for them!).

The impressions of a beginner: The GL has a great feel to the neck and the finish is 2nd to none, no doubt, however I would rate the 70s J Bass over the GL as far as playability and sound - again, from a beginner's perspective. The GL was $899 (down from $999) and the 70s J Bass was $679 I think. The 70s bass was considerably louder on the same amp with the same bass settings, even the sales guy thought that as well. Actually I think the 70s bass is an absolute steal for the money.

It won't matter however as I rate the Am Std above both and even at a discounted $999 a better bargain than both the others. I am going to keep going back periodically and make sure I want the Am Std over the 70s bass. I figure $300 over the next decade won't really be missed and I get a bass that increases in value, comes with a hardcase vs gig bag and comes in Candy Cola or Blizzard Pearl and Maple.

The sexiness of the Stainless Guard is making it move!

I can't wait til Christmas!!

An Amaerican Standard for $999.00? That's a no-brainer, run, do't walk back there and figure out which color combination. I liked the candy cola and sunburst with the maple necks. This is goingf to be your baby, one that will last you for years and years. Choose wisely my friend and, rattle the windows for me.

Enjoy!!

Personally I think the Classic 70's Bass sounds better than both the GL and American STD as far as quality the STD maybe a little better but not by much IMO. Now with that being said I actually think the Classic 70's may retain some of it' value because as it stands right now it seems difficult to get one, depending on were you're located and this may be a bass that Fender may discontinue within a few years and by next I'm pretty sure the price will increase also regardless of it's availability.

Doc,

Well my problem is that I have played about the whole Fender bass line-up and like them all  I seem to have a different favorite each time I go to GuitarCenter and I visit about 3 a week! Eventually they are probably going to ban me. I must admit that I am now probably leaning to a P-bass or one with a combination P and J PUs. I think the HighwayOnes are really cool but have limited colors and cost about the same as AmStd. But one thing I have noticed is that the Fender Pbass PUs are not really good thumb rests. They all seem to be toed into the body. I am really digging the 50s Pbass and the Deluxe Pbass with J and P PUs and a jazz neck to boot (as with the Aerodyne but no maple fretboard options). Also tend to always pull down the Jag Bass and fiddle with all the controls. Lots of sounds and a jazz neck. I can always add a BA bridge to any of the above?

Still searching, still excited, now more confused. Probably Deluxe PBass if I had to call it today

or maybe Jag

or maybe Geddy

or.....

You can't go wrong with any bass that you decide to get. The Highway Ones are fantastic basses. Make sure that you "haggle" with the price and check the serial numbers on the basses that you are looking at. I have never paid anywhere near full price for my basses. I notice alot of older basses being sold at new/full price at GC. Any non 08 bass should be heavily discounted because of age, and point out the fact that any bass on the shelf is essentially a "used" bass, being that everyone has gotten to go around the block with it. If they don't wanna deal with you, then walk.
P-bass pick ups can be elevated up and down for proper tonal qualities and IMO make adequate thumbrests. Also know that the '50s P bass neck is a tad bit wider than the modern P-bass neck(1.75"/44.5mm to 1.625/41.3mm). I have been eye-balling a Deluxe P also.

I love the Geddy Lee Bass, it is very comfortable to play because of the finish on the neck. Truely I went into GC one day and saw the 70's jazz bass and thought it was amazing looking, but I just bought a jazz a month before. It looked great but felt and sounded like crap. Cool block inlays looked awsome but the neck felt like it was a squier, the fretboard was not smooth at all. The sound of the bass didn't impress me much at all. It would just be an awsome bass if the neck was finished. If you really want a workhorse, and beautiful bass, try the Fender 60's Jazz Bass. It is under the classic series and is made in mexico. I have one in 3-tone sunburst and it looks and sounds just like the real US 62' or John Paul Jones' bass. It came out to $700, the same as the 70's jazz bass and the neck is beautifully finished. It just sounds great. I highly reccommend this bass and then the Geddy Lee Bass, If I were you I would honestly forget about the 70's jazz bass.

Hey Man,

Just got my GC flyer in the mail yesterday and that Deluxe Active P is on sale at 599. The color shown in the ad is the blizzard pearl/rosewood and it comes with a soft case (could be the only color on sale and I need chrome red/maple?). That is a 50 discount from the usual list here in the DFW area. If these are 08s they have do you think I can get the price any lower? Maybe I can work the color I want for the same price? Being a novice at shopping and purchasing instruments I appreciate you guys advice. I think I am favoring a PBass or a combination PU setup.

Jeff

Just looked at Musicians Friend for the bass you mentioned, first, it comes with a hard case and, I think it's a different model, if it's not, I want to move to where you live, you've had some great prices in your area.

Good luck in your search.

It is listed in the ad as, "Deluxe Active P Bass Special" and says it comes, "with deluxe gig bag". GC price $599.99. Blizzard pearl/Rosewood pictured.

This one I think:
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender-Delu ... 1148626.gc

The back of the ad (it is a 2 sided quad fold) says, "Bring this coupon to your local GC to redeem a special discount on any Fender or Squire product purchase". 11/17/08 - 12/7/08

It is usually tagged at $649 at all the DFW GCs where I have seen it. The add has the Jag at 749.99 which is what I have always seen it at and the Am Std Jazz at , "Price is too low to print" It really says that in the ad! $995 last I saw at GC on the Am Std Jazz. The ad has blizzard pearl and Black/white with Rosewood pictured.

This one I think:

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender-Amer ... 1386299.gc

Maybe it is only certain colors that are avail?? Maybe they are not 08s??

Give them a shout, maybe you can order from them? Shipping and tax might wash?

Aren't there like 4 or 5 GC's in the DFW area? Isn't there a big bass store in Dallas also. Someone is bound to give you a deal that you will be happy with. Just take your time, be patient, and get exactly what you want and will be happy with. You've had the Ibanez bass for a while already so a little longer won't hurt. JMO.

But if I were you, I would target the American Standard. They're the shizz. Maybe even wait till after X-mas, who knows?

Gotta agree with Zod. For where you're at as a new player, the American Standard will be with you for as long as you desire. It's a great bass, I have quite a few Fender basses in my past that I'd give almost anything to get back.

Whatever youu decide, have a blast.
