Does anybody have any thoughts on the quality of the Mexian versus the American versions of the jazz bass? Which is the better value when considering cost, should I save up or go for instant gratification?

I have a 1996 MIM Fretless, Never really played any of the newer USA models.

I like it better than my buddie's 1978 Jazz Bass.

I wouldn't sell or trade mine for anything :D

I agree...

The New American Standard is smoking. A much more refined instrument from top to bottom. Though the Mexican still has that Fender tone...you can't go wrong. After the American standard (with passive instruments - the classic sound), the increments for tonal improvement become smaller.

The Award Winning Bass Player Magazine article really sums it up...

Yes, you absolutely get what you paid for. I've had one MIM and currently have two MIA. The MIM was fine, but when I picked up one of my American basses there was such a difference.

No question the MIA has a number of subtle differences that all add up to improved playability. But a properly set up MIM (-- you check out the construction, etc. in the store of course) is decent too. One of my main basses is an MIA fretless P-bass but I'm quite happy with the (occasional use) MIM 5 string J-bass.

The construction is decent, the active pups produce exactly the pop I was looking for and it's very playable. I'd probably have gone with an MIA if this was my primary bass but the MIM is fine.

The final consideration is economics -- if you can't afford an MIA right now but need a bass soon, you certainly won't go wrong with the MIM. You're not getting a toy that's going to break in 6 months or anything like that!

Ive played both US made and Mexican Jazzes and the Mexicans do a damn good job for the price.

I find the only differeces are very very small and everything feels very simillar, the electronics seem a tad more superior on the MIA's but all in all for the price of 1 MIA you can get a fretless and fretted MIM of very decent quality.

MIM's when set up properly are fantastic.

Yeah MIM is brilliant for the price. My main bass is a MIM 2003 Fender Jazz. Its set up soo low and no buzz, definetly the most comfortable bass ive played out of ANY Fender.

The price difference is labour for sure, and slightly more high quality parts.

Love the vid btw!

MY thought is if your getting an active bass go mia, passive you can get away with mim but the mia is the better instrument in the long run. The mim active basses i have had a lot of problems with the electronics in and the mia no problems at all.

MIA-US made
MIM-made in Mexico

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z86lQGiP6Wc (MIM Fender Special Run)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFtRn-4DX5g (MIM Fretless Jazz Bass)

I played MIA’s and MIA’s are quality guitars and I think they’re the best but nothing beats MIM’s when it comes to value and quality 100%, the best price minus the US labor price! By the way MIM necks are still made in the US and shipped to Mexico. They are still in a very rough condition. They will need to be finished sanded and sprayed in the Mexico factory.
So about the “YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR” are you paying MORE money for quality??? We are talking about hundreds of dollars more!!! Think about the labor here in the US compared to the labor in Mexico. By the way I just found this site “The Fender Mexico Factory Tour”

I have to agree for someone looking for a fender bass, and being new to bass playing the differences are not very noticeable to my untrained ears.

However, I will be going with a MIA because I do prefer to have my money going to America. One of the reasons our economy sucks is because many companies have outsourced to other countries.

Buy American.
