Welcome to the forum!

My advice is try to play each of one of those basses and get the one that makes you feel comfortable.

But I would go for the Deluxe active jazz bass!

play with all the ones you've mentioned, whichever floats you at the end, is the one you should get. Play it with as close as possible to your own rig, so you can get as close as possible sound when you get it home. A lot of music stores let you play with these massive rigs, and when you go home you can remake the sound you heard at the store. Good luck, have fun searching.

Brian,

I have had just about every bass imaginable, and I am a luthier so I have built many basses.

If you have narrowed it down to just Fender Precision and Fender Jazz basses. Then it comes down to a few things:

1. What kind of music do you play?
2. What kind of rig do you play through?
3. Does a wider nut or narrower nut feel more comfortable to you?
4. Do you like the versatility of two pickups vs. one, or will it even matter with your musical style?

There are more, but these are some of the top contenders.

The Jazz bass is known for a great midrangy growl, but make no mistake about it, you can get some serious bottom end depending on your rig. The P bass is going to give your sound a very round, full sound that, again, might be more appropriate for the music you play. In either case, a maple fret board will provide a briter tone than a rosewood.

I play all styles of music semi-professionally. I use only Fender 62' Reissue Jazz basses and a Fender Bassman 250/210 amp. I have yet to find a style and sound I can't cover with this set up. I have P basses, Musicman basses, Guild, Rickenbacker and Alembic basses. I will always turn to my Fender Jazz 62' Reissues for all of my gigs. The rest have become artifacts in a collection of bass evolution.

Also, don't get overly hung up on active vs. passive pickups. I let my rig privide the EQ and my hands provide the rest.

Good luck deciding.

All of the above. Plan your day where you can hang out in your store of choice and make up your mind.

My only contribution to the list is, don't just play one bass if there are three of the same model, try them all. It's amazing how much difference you can feel in different guitars.

Oxfan is correct. Play as many of the model as the music store will let you get your mits on. These are made from natural materials that in spit of using CNC machines to produce require a fair amount of hand fitting. Therefore each instrument will be slightly different in tone, weight, fit and finish. These are your hard earned dollars. Don't let the store convince you to take the first one they'll show you just so they can depleat their inventory.

Also, try and learn the difference between a poorly set-up instrument and a poorly built instrument or one that has material problems. An poorly set-up instrument can be made to play great. A poorly built instrument will take a professional luthier to be made to play great. You already paid for the instrument once - why pay again. When I look at a new instrument that seems to play poorly, I look at the bridge adjustment, the nut slot depths, the nut spacing for eveness, pickup height and I sight down the neck for straightness and look for any frets not seated all the way against the fretboard. All of these can be corrected. Before I learned to correct them myself, sometimes I had been able to get them corrected by the music store as part of the out the door deal.

The big point here is that this is your cash. Play everything you can get your hands on and don't settle.
