i own a fretless standard jazz bass, i like it and all, but i wished it was fretted.

if your a fretless player, i would recommend fender 9210 strings. they are nylon coated. they are smooth soundin strings. great bottom end!!!!! these strings are what i use on my fretless jazz bass. i love them

Fretless.

The fretted one comes out for the funk stuff!

I love both basses , and when I play a fretless bass my style of playing is more melodic than when I play with the fretted bass. You know ,I want everyone to know I'm playing a fretless bass so I do more vibrato and slides and longer notes with the mwahh! sound a la Mark Egan. For that sound you need to have extremely low action and a really straight neck. With a fretted bass I tend to play a bit more agressive.

Although I love the feel of a fretless and I really enjoy playing it, I can't use it for most of the stuff I'd gig with. I "could" but I wouldn't really want to. Ideally I'd have one of each.

A fretted jazz bass would keep me pretty happy though. I'd love to own a fretless though too, which I'll probably get sometime in the future. Those warwick fretless are pretty sweet too. Hmmm...

While I prefer fretless, many situations call for fretted. So my tendency is to use 50/50 on jazz numbers, mostly fretted on blues/rock and mostly fretless on anything "big band era" or traditional rural blues/folk. In my arsenal:

5 string MIM J-bass: funk, some rock, some jazz
4 string MIA fretless P bass: mostly jazz, big band era, etc.
4 string Gibson SG: classic rock, some folk, blues
4 string Ocean fretless: with active pups, it has a lot of pop you wouldn't ordinarily expect with a fretless. Great for acid jazz, some rock, etc. but not great for old school.
4 string Breedlove acoustic/electric. As several reviews said, terrific for around the campfire when your 6 string friends show up. You can actually be heard! I use it very sparingly plugged in -- sound is far too bright and hollow. (One day I'll experiment with strings to get that more useful.)

I like both, but I don't have a Fretted Jazz Bass. I have MIM Fretless (1996)

My fretted Jazz Bass type is a Ventures Model Wilson Brothers VMB-55 (Cross between a Mosrite and Jazz Bass)

I found I play the same style on both, But I consentrate more when playing the fretless.

It has a tone that can't be beat :D :D

I've played both but I went with a fretted one when it came time to purchase one.

I wish the fretless model did not have the fret markers. Sure, it will make it easier while learning to play fretless, but I feel it detracts from the beauty of the instrument. I want that fretboard to not just feel smooth, but to look it to.

:o For me it is important to always have a fretted bass, but it’s really good to have both! It’s just so fun to play the fretless! The fretless bass can really do a lot of things!

Just depends on the tone you want to acheive and the feel. I love how expressive the freless feels and you cant beat the fretted slap tone!!

I like a fretted jazz, but a fretless precision, like the ones from the 70's.
