I have an American Deluxe J Bass. Plugged it in the other night for the first time in about 10 days. Gnarly buzz happening that I can't get rid of. I changed the batteries, opened up and cleaned the electronics as well, neither worked. However, when I play, or have my fingers/hands on the strings the noise/buzz goes almost completely away. It has been dry here in SoCal the last few days and maybe it is a static problem? Should I lightly wipe all surfaces with a sheet of bounce?

Any advise or recommendations would be helpful.

Thanks everybody.

Shel

Check the grounding! Especially loose wires or maybe corrosion in the ground side.

Thanks for that, I did think of that while troubleshooting. The wiring everything is all good, newer amp and surge protector. Was also playing one of my "other" non-Fender basses, that is also an active bass, with no buzz/noise at all.

hmmm! My experience with that kind of noise is faulty ground , the most common problem. Also , interference from electronic devices like a computer monitor or a ground fault at the building . But since you have another bass that does not make that noise , I think its the bass , double check the connections . If you cant find the problem take it to a specialist.
You can also connect the bass and inspect the wiring , wiggle the wires without touching the bare wires or the ground and check if the noise goes away.

I have the same noise problem with American deluxe V Jazz recently I bought, but I had solve it with copper foil (you also can do with glued allumunium foil and less corrosion) inside the rout (that reduces 50 cycle hum and give negative polarity more conductivity instead only on control plate and screw negative cable to body wood) and let the ground cable stick together with it (including the bridge PU rout, you need to connect the foil with ground cable so all that's copper lining together connected. Last but not least you should cover the electronic with little plastic bag (to isolating the electronic/onboard pre-amp electricity radiation from negative polarity surrounding by copper foil. It's work for me...another point is that my battery life longer than before (before only last 3-4 weeks with 3-4 hours/day playing. Now already 3 months and still ready to rock without hum headache !). Try it and good luck !!
ps : sorry for bad grammar.

I believe that the American Deluxe jazz bass is active and it should be very quiet . In my opinion ,I still think there is something wrong with the wiring .
