I installed a BASELINES 'P' pickup in the neck position and put in new pots, BUT... Using a wiring diagram for the Aerodyne Jazz that I got from Fender, and wiring exactly per diagram...

Here is the problem: with pots turned OFF sound still comes through to the amp, at a #3 setting on amp it is LOUD with pots OFF, and if I turn up either pot it is REALLY loud, to loud in fact!

Can anyone tell where I or the wiring schematic went wrong. Or, is there another schematic available somewhere that shows a way to wire a combo 'P' pickup and a 'J' pickup as the Aerodyne. has?

Many thanks - Bassinat66

Check the Seymour Duncan website , they have wiring diagrams! In case there is a difference in the wiring! Also what model p-pickup? Heres a link to SD basslines site.

http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/basslines/

this is the link with various diagrams.

The model is the SPB-3Quater pound. - and an SJB-1 Vintage P/U for bridge pos.

A wiring dia came with the pickups but not one for a 'P' and 'J' combination.

click on the second link, there are 3 different wiring diagrams , one of those is a p-j combination.

Thanks for that but - This diagram is for an active pickup sset up, the Aerodyne is passive, loved the diagram though!

Okay, got it, the diagram explains the different wiring setup but I'm using basslines for both neck and bridge and this diagram shows how.

Many Thanks for the help!

I do appreciate it! Garyis

I will, but not for a few days! This diagram looks like the original wiring that was on the bass and not like the fender diagram which I used. This looks like it will work.

jlarocho... the wiring appears to be correct but all the soldering has me going to order new clean pots - but the size of the capacitor on the tone control on the diagram says 0.5 - the number on the original tone cap itself is 1H473K. I'm buy parts from http://www.guitarelectronics.com/ and they do not have a 0.5. they do have a jazz set of 3 ea pots, the correct ones, and 2 ea caps, but they do not state the size of the caps. QUESTION: how much does it matter if the EXACT size is not used? Garyis

Weeks - - later ---

Juan, I installed the baselines P and J pickups and all 3 pots (250) on my Aerodyne - Sounds Great - BUT I have a buzz when I touch any metal part on the bass. I wired it exactly as the schematic from Seymour Duncan for a P and J combination set up showed. I'll admit that my soldering is not 100% but all connections are secure but I think that it is a ground problem The ground wire to the bridge is secure because I replaced the wire. The pot set -up I got from allguitarparts had 2 ea capacitors and I only used on as the diagram showed, maybe I need 2 of them?

No hurry, I have my Jazz bass.

Thanks

Gary Is

Sorry for taking so long to answer , I was on job training for the weekend!

And the ground wire from the bridge or pots to the input jack?

I talked with a guitar tech and he mentioned wiring size, I have 3 different size wires, and may have got the pots to hot.

Okay, the bridge ground wire was attached - so I cut it off and the buzzing stopped when I touched the bridge or the tuners, but still buzzed when I touched the pot shaft.

So, I just ordered a jazz bass wiring kit with 3 new pots, the correct size capacitor and the right size size wiring , a new soldering iron and a multimeter. This is a learning project for me now!

But, WOW, with the new BASSLINES Q Pound pickups the bass is hot, DEEP, have to keep the amp volume control at #1, any higher it'll blow the windows out (this is with the bass control on full volume)

Thanks for staying with me on this. GaryIs
