Hi,

I'm totally new here, and I couldn't find the answer to my question in the search engine. So...

I've just bought a Fender Japan 62 RI jazz with Japanese vintage pickups on eBay. Its color is red, with a white pickguard. The seller says that it has a 'P Crafted in Japan Serial number', and it dates from 1999-2002.

Now here my question:
It actually was a quite impulsive acquisition, and now (a week later) I'm not sure what to expect from it. I've owned a Mexican Fender Active jazz deluxe.
Is this 62 CIJ reissue going to be better or not? How does it relate to MIA's from nowadays?

Thanks in advance!

Christiaan (From Belgium)

Hey Christiaan, welcome to the forum(s). Not sure about quality compared to current MIAs but the CIJ product are superb products. You got a reissue, so you will get that vintage sound that the '62 was designed to have. If you like your active sound, it's doing to be a different sound, but adjustable to mimic with manipulation of your amp, via eq or tonal adjustment. Other guys here use effect(s) and pedals to have their sound, if you do, you can still do that with those. Good luck, and congrats on the purchase.

Ok thanks.
Glad to hear that! I had become a little unsure after a week after ordering.
I never had a passive fender, but I think I'll like it more as passive ones.

Maybe I'll upgrade it later on with some custom shop passive pickups.

By the way, what color of pickguard fits good with a red fender? Now it is white, but that's not really my cup of tea

CIJ basses are great quality!

Try a tortoiseshell pickguard!

If you ask this guy, the tort pg is always the answer... J/k Juan.
I like active pups, I have 'em on 2 of my basses now. The VM is the bass that's passive in a long line of previous basses. You won't regret getting the bass when it shows up.

I'm a tortoiseshell pickguard advocate!

A tort pg will add more detail to the instrument and will look much better than a solid color pg. (that's my opinion)

I know that this bass is not red but its close(guava). Just to see the color combination that you could get ! Also notice the EMG pickups.

Still waiting for that bass. I sold my other one in advance to have enough cash. Haven't had a bass in my hands for 3 weeks now  Can't stand it no longer.

I'm going for a grey or black pearloid pickguard, and putting DR Sunbeams on it as soon as it arrives. Love the vintage mellow sound :!:

Christiaan, keep us posted, then post pix when you get it. Before you know it, it'll be in your hands and playing the crap out of it.

Christian,

I have 2 MIJ 62' Reissues. I wouldn't sell them for the world. Fantastic quality, great fit and finish and play like butter. My only issue is I would prefer alder rather than basswood. I wish you the best with it.

I have a '62 RI Jazz Fretless which I got about 3 years ago (ordered from Japan). I love that bass. Very well build and sounds great. Plus, for some reason, the fretless version is the only one with the vintage reverse tuners. The fretted '62 RI do not.

Hi,

a little late but better than never, right?

I got my '62 RI Cij Fender jazz for a few months now. It plays lovely and has a good tone, better than what I expected.

But I'm thinking of changing the pickups, because these are made in Japan as well, and US is mostly better I guess.

I've seen some AVRI '62 pickups on eBay. Do these fit in my Japanese '62 ri (in size) because these measures sometimes differ on Fenders?
