Just my opinion...I started out with a pbass copy (Hondo, very bad bass), I played for about 1.5 years with it, I figured with the time spent learning, reading, and applying what I learned, a good bass should be what I have. I got the Fender, and it'a been the only one of many basses I've not sold - for mostly sentimental reason(s). I don't recommend getting a good bass right away. I would start with a Squier Jazz, not that pricey, the standard Jbass is about $250, could be less if you haggle (not online). Learn the fundamentals, and go from there. If this is what you want to play, then you can get a better one as you get better or if you decide to always play bass. Good luck, welcome to the forums, have fun. :)

I started off with a bass where you could drive a car under between the strings and the neck and to be honest, I'd have given it up in two weeks. By good luck someone handed me a Hagstrom (around 1967) with a low action, great intonation and a decent sound; instead of quitting, I bought the bass and kept on learning.

So I agree with Power JazzBass -- try out a Squire -- the ones I've tried are nicely made and very playable. Once you get going, you can always have a local guitar tech fine tune the action a bit for you. Consider that step a reward for the practice you've been putting in!

I'm more of a P-bass type, but again I have to agree with Power JazzBass in that the J-bass will offer more sound possibilities. That choice will take you a long way and the rest, of course, is up to you.

Follow this advice. It's so true, a less than stellar bass can sound great with the proper set up, just like a great bass can sound bad with a horrible set up.
