Are the new Jazz basses- which are exact copies of the 60's and the 70's just as good as the vintage ones- or is it worth the extra money to hunt for and purchase the vintage ones?

Wow, that's in the eye of the beholder. When you get vintage bass, no warranty what so ever. So, I always recommend new ones, with a warranty. Why pay all this money and have to worry about fixing or losing, due to the immense value a vintage bass would carry. It's great if you can afford a vintage, but let's face it, most of us that buy to collect will not play it, but get it insured and seal it in a glass case. Players will play it, and chances are won't insure it. So, your call, it's your money. If you will play it, get a new one, tone will be close if not the same. Your amp will make a difference in how your bass will sound. I'd vote for new.

I couldn't disagree more. I have been playing bass for 30 years. I have purchased new and used basses and have never had a problem with any of them. I currently own a 1976 Precision, 1978 Jazz and a 1997 Alembic, all of which were used when I purchased them. I play all of them and have never had a problem them. If the buyer does their research and does a thorough inspection of a used bass, there is no reason not to buy it. I would never buy a bass that I haven't played first. Vintage basses always seem to sound and play better. If the re-issues are so good why are so many pros playing vintage basses?

Because the pros can afford and have techs to fix it. Most common/hobbyist can't afford $2500 vintage bass then play it while maintaining an insurance for the vintage bass.

Lets see $12,000 and up for a '64 Jazz or $2500 for a '64 reissue. I think the reissue, imagine a fresh ding playing a $12000 dollar bass.

Although I'm way off, I've seen vintage '70s bass for $2500. But like you said, a '64 reissue for $2500 beats $12000 any day.
