Hey folks,

I was wondering if anyone could answer a quick question that I have about a potential new addition to my bass collection.

A fellow I know is selling his '72 fretless jazz(?) bass. The questions I have revolve around this bass's neck. I was wondering if anyone knows if Fender ever officially made a reverse-neck fretless bass, or if this is just a left-handed neck attached to a right-handed bass.

Also I'm not 100% sure if it's a jazz because the neck says it is, but the pick-ups are p-bass style in the neck and then the single j-bass at the bridge.

If anyone could give me any sort of insight into this it would be greatly appreciated. Once again, it's a '72 blonde fretless neck, and it's either a reverse bass or a left handed neck. I'll try and get some pics of the instrument and hopefully post them soon. (oh, and I haven't asked him if i can take apart his bass to check for serial numbers. I don't know how well that would be received, lol)

I have seen 1970 fretless jazz basses ! None were reversed headstock and none had fretlines . So if the one you are talking about had fretlines it is a home made fretless . Also 1970 jazz basses were using single coil jazz style pickups , I doubt that Fender used P-bass style pickups in 70's jazz basses .

If you are looking to buy it, you are better off buying a Fender (MIM)standard fretless jazz bass with fretlines . I have tried those and they are 8) and nice sounding .

Yea, I just picked it up. I figured, regardless of the body, the neck is pretty cool. i'll post them on here in the next 30-40mins

Ok, Here's pics of this fretless. Notice that it's a right-handed instrument, but it has a reversed headstock. I'm just wondering if it came that way, or if's just a lefty neck on a right-handed instrument. And possibly a rough date range if anyone has any ideas. Thanks. Oh yea, and I know...it's a p-bass not a jazz.

I think that's a cool bass regardless.

I know this is an ancient post but it was something I had been looking for. Serial number on your headstock indicates 1977. I located the pics of this bass (nice by the way) because I have a 1972 that I was researching. It has a P Bass body but was not routed on the top for the wiring (all access through the back). I was just trying to confirm that it was possible some were made in that way. My 72 neck has a date stamp on the end for 1972 and it has a serial number on the neck plate that works for that timeframe as well. It may just be a non-Fender body with the 72 neck. Do you know if that body on your bass is Fender?
