I am looking at getting a new Jazz Bass which one is the most bang for the buck?

I just picked up the Highway 1 Jazz on the 12th of Sept and I have to say that overall, it's probably one of the best looking and best sounding basses out there. For the $850, it's more than worth it.

Spitfire'd, no pics = no bass. :P

Thanks Zod..... :P

Thanks Zod, I've been looking for a tort guard, but I haven't found a 10-scew hole one yet. I don't really know if there's much difference between that and a 9-hole one, do you know if there is?

I went and played a couple of different basses and I fell in love with a fretless but it was a squier. I did some research and found that I could get a fretless in an American Deluxe, American Standard, and a MIM standard. With price in mind what is my best bet?

Whichever makes you feel the most comfortable spending the money on, if you can afford it, the AD should be the one, it's the top range in the collection you speak off. The Squier is no joke for what the price is. The standard is a good bass, some of them can also be superb. The MIA's in general have the great quality that seems to bother people lately - arguments going on here about MIM and MIA lately. I personally think the MIA are the better quality in general, but a lot of improvements in quality has been done lately to the MIM not like back in the '90s. If it was me, I'd get the AmStd, use the left over for some accessories, or if you can't, get the MIM and get a lot of accessories.

Is the American jazz bass worth the extra money over a mexican

I've owned an MIM and AmStd Strat and also an MIM and AmStd J-bass and in general, I can say that "yes," they are worth the extra. The differences can be subtle -- finish, fretwork, joins, etc. That being said, not all of these features affect playability, at least in the short or intermediate run.

Still, you can find decently made MIM and if money is a high concern, you won't really lose out. Assuming you've tried it, you know what you're getting up front. But I'd look at additional work you think might be needed short run.

Does it need quite a bit of setup? Would you probably upgrade pups, bridge or whatever in the near future? If you're thinking about spending half or more of the difference within the next 6 months to a year, you'd be (my opinion) better off with the AmStd right up front.

That leaves Highway 1. I haven't tried any of the current (re-designed) Hwy1, but I've always been very happy with my ~5 year old Hwy1 Tele. The quality is very high and it was playable as I got it. This may be a compromise but in my mind, a worthwhile one.

How much are you looking to spend? If it were me, I think the Highway 1 series is the best bang for the buck, yes it's more expensive than the Standard (MIM) but it comes with the BadAss II bridge, '70s logo, nitro c finish, and a big plus, it's an MIA. That's me tho.

I concur.

To tell you the truth, the BadAss II would be the big thing for me, the paint - a little, the logo - yeah it's pretty classic, MIA - yeah, it's nice for the price, but the BadAss is the grabber for me.

Is the American deluxe worth the extra over the standard?
