I seen photos of Mel Schacher's Jazz Bass from the 60's Grand Funk Railroad photos and wondering why the Jazz Basses of today don't have the metal bridge & metal pickup covers on them like they did during the 60s.

You can buy them, most people take them off anyways.
Marcus Miller is about the only guy nowadays that kept the front one on.
They're commonly called "ashtrays"...what most guys actually did use them for...saved their headstocks.

They're available at the on-line stores, haven't seen any in actual stores. They run anywhere from $12.00 to $20.00, if you want them, shop around, somebody is always cheaper.

I have them on my bass, instead of drilling and screwing =, I used velcro, it works great and, when I get the whim, off they come and when I want them back, just takes a second.

Couldn't bring myself to drill holes in my bass

They impede most modern playing styles now so most people take them off (and were doing so even back in the 60s). I figure fender just decided it wasn't really worth it and they dont really have much of a useful function any more! (I think the P bass ones used to act like PUP covers on a rickenbacker did and help eliminate hum but again I think that is no longer the case).

I love the look of a jazz with covers but I doubt I'd be able to put up playing with them on :(

I agree Ally, they do crimp ones's style. The only time I can I can leave them on is when I do John Entwistle stuff, otherwise they come off, the beauty of velcro.

I remember back in the day of Grand Funk Railroad Mel Schacher had the Jazz Bass with the guards on and I thought it made the bass look a whole lot nicer.

The cover does look nice on the jazz bass. I just would not be able to bring myself to drill my precious bass!

It's honestly not a biggie. Just a quick job with a hand drill, a steady hand and a small bit.
