Hey everyone, I have a quick question. I bought a used 62 relic jazz bass about a month ago and just recently started to notice the plastic layer around the name 'fender' has started to peal slightly . . just wanted to know if its only a temporary protective layer and nothing I need to worry about?

If the bass was built like true 62, the Fender logo was put on after the neck was finished. I've seen true vintage Fenders were the logo had started to peel off. Later Fender started putting on the logo before the neck is finished.

Yeah, that is true. Fender did apply the logo or decal to the headstock after finishing the neck at one point. Nothing serious to worry about but it is aging for the most part. I play a '62 Jazz.

Don't pull on it or you may damage your decal. I would be very careful with it and I would try to slightly dampen the area around your decal to see if it can re-adhere to the headstock.

It sounds like a nice bass to have though.

i dont know if this is a good idea, but its the first thing that came to mind which i would do:

try to re-apply the fender decal (by moistening it witha bit of water) and then add a really thin layer of clear varnish on top so it stays in place :D

as i said, i dont know if it is a good idea, but its what i would probably do.

Interesting, I'll have to check the headstock on my 62 reissue but I'm pretty sure the sticker has been finished over.
