Yeah, they look like they are a nice bridge to work with. Is there a huge difference between them and your typical Fender type bridge? I've never had any bass that had one of those on them. They've always been Fender type bridges, even when they aren't actual Fenders.

The 3- point Gibson / Epi Bridge I think sets a bit easier than the standard Fender Vintage style bridge. And you don't thread a string through a hole with the 3 - point, with the silk ends on the string. Some silks are pretty thick on the E, & A strings. I don't worry about that with the 3 - point bridge.

They just hook around the back, don't they?

Yep. Very simple design.

We were talking about the EB-3 not fitting well in the Gator TSA case the Fender Jazz was in, because of the angle of the EB-3's head. The EB-3's head angle is pitched at 14 degrees. Thats how they give it a good tension across the nut, to the head, by pulling the strings down on the 14 degrees without a string tree.

Yeah, that does look like a simple design. Would you say you like it better than the Fender design, or about the same, just different?

You know, I''m not sure of the exact degree, but the head stock on the violin bass is like that. I guess the one disadvantage of those, at least with the Gibson ones is aren't they more prone to breakage if dropped?

It is a bit more simplistic than the Fender. The 14 degree angled head is more prone too breakage. The Gibson heads I've seen with head fractures, occurred in the case. The case was either dropped, or had a hard blow to the side of the upper section toward the head area, of the case. The SG cases are shaped as a guitar, and don't give enough gap, or area for the head to be clear of the energy of the impact force to the case. A rectangular case would absorb more of the energy impacted in it. Hence, less energy inflicted to the guitar, or bass in the case.

Yeah, that's something you'd really have to be careful of. I suppose that's one area where a Fender or similar type instrument does have an advantage. It can take a beating to some degree, not that's a recommended thing to do.

Fender is probably the toughest on the market. I wouldn't think about putting a Gibson / Epiphone up against Fenders design for durability say for the road. 8)

All in all though, this old Roadie loves the SG basses, and SG guitars. Power cords played from an SG 6 stringer is the best. Example, Cream, "Tales Of Brave Ulysses" from the "Live Cream Volume ll" album. Volume up a bit to enhance the sound. The Marshall 200's didn't hurt the live Blair sounds either.

Yeah, an SG is one hell of a rock machine, if you want to get that classic sound.

Townsend from The Who, Clapton with Cream, Leigh Stevens with Blue Cheer, etc. And JMH for certain songs.

At one time the list was pretty long. But that was the same with the Gibson EB basses at that time also.

The two people I mainly think of playing SG's, at least associated with the "classic rock" genre, are Angus Young from AC/DC and Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath. I also think of Derek Trucks, from The Allman Brothers, which that red one is pretty much his main guitar.

There were several locals that I knew, or backed on bass with SG's.
