I do really think the Talman would surprise the hell out of you with Nylons on. I know Violin bridges are lousy to work with.

Yeah, I think that the neck on the Ibanez would play nice with those strings, since they are thicker gauge than what I typically use. I had a hell of a time changing the strings on the violin bass when I did, but then again, that was the first time I even messed with something like that.

Image I have to LOL as they say here in the 21st century. The restringing of Violin / Viola basses are a royal PITA!!! That absolutely RIGHT ON, as we used to say in the '60s of the 20th century. One of those things, that the more someone restrings them, it does get a bit easier. Notice, I said A Bit! Look at it like doing a 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle. Take your time, curse, and swear a bit. DAMN IT!!! Is my all time favorite. It was my dad's too, I think I say it thinking of him. Image

Yeah, it doesn't have the bridge that you can just feed it through a hole, you have to kind of get it in a groove, or whatever the hell is under there, and hope for the best. :P

Not much room to work with getting the ball of the string to set into place. I know. My EB-0 is so much easier to string. Image

Yeah, that looks much easier to string up, that's for sure.

It's a nice simple hook style that the ball sets into. I straighten them out so they are supported by both sides of the anchor hook. I think it just looks a bit nicer too. Image

I just like little touches like that. The strings look a little better strung straight together. I did that on the road for some players, and they liked the look as well.

How much extra time does it take you to do that? I suppose it couldn't be any worse that actually trying to put strings on one of those wooden bridge set ups.

Not any extra time at all. I get the string close to its set with the tuning key, then with my right hand, hold the ball firmly in the straight position, and then continue to turn the key to get it tight enough so it holds in its set position. The rest is adjusting the string to be in tune. Its literally part of stringing, and tuning the bass. The entire time, is part of just changing a string x 4. The way I've done it anyway, for some time now. The strings do fine when simply inserted, but to me, the stringing just looks finished. Too much Roadie in me, for too long! Image Image

I've never tried that, myself. The one thing that gets me about restringing, sans any violin bass issues, is cranking the tuners around getting the strings on, albeit a lot more tedious on a regular guitar. I should really invest in one of those cranks that do the job faster.

I have a crank that I used a couple times. I'd rather just do it manually. I could see if I was back stage, doing an emergency stringing, maybe. But for just my own personal basses, nahhh,...........

True, since it's not like you are constantly having to change strings. Then again, neither am I. I think if I were touring or something like that (which I'd like to do, if everything actually pans out for once,) then that's something I'd definitely add one or two to the gig bag, besides all of the other extras. They also have those electric drill type ones, which I'm sure the pro road crews probably use, because they have to be quick with that stuff during a concert. They even have ones with tuners built in, so you just hook it up and go. I think that's pretty cool. Nothing wrong with convenience.

I did use the drill attachment a couple of times. But I thought the hand crank in its situations overall, safer, and almost as quick. I've seen a few guys break more strings with the drill attachment. It went faster than they anticipated, and BOING!!!! There went that string!

I just take my time anymore when I do change out strings. Of course, I'm not in any hurry, but if I were, 5-10 minutes, start to finish on a bass that is. One string at a time.
