The EB-0 is pretty much a good all around bass. I have to be honest, at this part of my life I'm less picky about what bass is good for what type of music, etc. I can still be more partial for what type of bass, just as it's design, body shape, neck, etc.

You know, it probably doesn't really matter, other than aesthetics. For example, those Jackson guitars have really nice, fast necks on them, and they are typically used in heavy metal music, but who's to say you couldn't use them elsewhere, say like country? I guess the only reason would be because they look like heavy metal guitars. I've often struggled with that concept, with guitar designs, as well.

Me too. All I know is, I have the SG body design on the EB-0, that's my last bass.

Well, if it is, it's certainly a good one. I have a feeling my Ibanez won't be mine, or the other ones I have. :P Sometimes, I might think it could be, but something always seems to change that, sometimes not for the better, too. I've had a few regrets by dumping certain basses. That's GAS for you.

You have more time to do things down the road. I'm getting shorter on time. 68, And counting. It's just how things work.

Hey, you never know what can happen. I've actually outlived both of my brothers, and they died at 40 and 38 years old, unfortunately. A month apart from each other, too. I guess you take it one time at a time, and any day above ground is a good day. I got that from some blues song I heard a few years ago.

I out lived my father. He passed 10 days shy of his 47th year. That was 44 years ago now. It doesn't seem that long ago, when I look back on that now. Time does really seem to slip away. I try not to dwell on how, when, and where I may leave myself. It's will take me someday, like everyone else.

Yeah, that's something that's certain. I don't try to think about that, either. I try to take care of myself, so I can get a few more years in, though. I really didn't for a long time, that's for sure. It's funny, when you're in your 20's, the whole concept is completely alien, like you're invisible, or something. I suppose being in a war like you were certainly was a harsh lesson of reality being that age, though.

Being 20 helped I think in my case any way. I was a bit less goofy.

I imagine a situation like that would force anyone not to be goofy real quick. It's kind of messed up that a teenager can go to war, but cannot buy alcohol, and now they can't even buy cigarettes until they are 21. They just raised the age to buy tobacco products to 21, which sucks for a current smoker that's 18 to 20 years old, not that it's good for you. I used to smoke cigarettes, but quit back in 2004. I really wasn't a heavy smoker before I quit, so it wasn't too big of a deal. I just did it cold turkey, and was a $@!&* for a week, but then got over it when the nicotine got out of my system. I've heard that stuff is even more addictive than opiates, but I can't confirm that. It probably is.

The kids, as I referred to them, the 18, and 19 year olds. They were the Regulars that enlisted. Most of the 20 year olds like me, and older, were USA. (draftees) We were the only ones that were required to state our status as USA when entering into the mess hall, etc. There were three of us in my platoon that were USA, and proud of it. Bob, Larry, and I stated with a stern voice, proclaiming USA. In our USA threesome, I was USA two. Sometimes I think the Non-coms, and officers showed us a bit of favor. We were treated about the same, but they seemed to talk to us more man to man, and not hustle us around. We got the job done, and in most cases were able to walk home, or not be carried to the LZ. I was the only USA of the three to make it home not in a stainless steel casket.Image

Sorry to hear about the other two. I never knew about this USA draftee thing before. Why did you have to state that in a mess hall? You were as much in the military as anyone else was, even though you weren't there by choice.

Speaking of being drafted, I'm subscribed to this site about rare historical photos, and things of that nature, of various events in the past, or whatever, and the recent one sent to me was of Elvis when he was drafted in 1958. The thing that got me wondering about that, is why he was even drafted in the first place, since there wasn't an active war going on in 1958 to need anyone drafted. Well, technically we were getting involved in Vietnam in 1958, but that was on some minor advisory level, and certainly not was it was to become, but other than that, nothing really. Maybe it had to do with his popularity at that time, and they thought they could have used that?

There was a quota the army needed to keep a level of troops up at. The Cold War was raging for some time. And our old friends north of the 38th parallel was a very scary place too.

It really didn't matter whether you were Regular, or USA. We all sat together, and ate the same food. Thinking back on it though, I think it was their way of reminding everyone who was who. The USA's in my platoon, had a swagger to our walk. Flat out, we didn't take any crap, and didn't get any. I think the non-coms had a bit of respect for us. The USA's mostly did better than the Regulars did, and did it not from enlistment choices. We did give the non-coms a bit more respect when interacting with them also.

That's true, the 50's was really when the whole Cold War thing got ramped up, with the whole McCarthyism thing, and then there was Cuba at the end of it all.

Yeah, I imagine it didn't also matter who you were when the $@!& was hitting the fan, too.

Getting back to Epiphone, I have to say it sucks that the Viola bass costs $399 new. I've been really playing the hell out of the violin bass lately, even plugged it in to the Ampeg last night, and it has been working out rather well for me. It really sounded pretty good through the Ampeg, although I'm sure the Epiphone has way better pickups on it. If I could, I'd sell the Ibanez to get one, but it's not worth enough. Don't get me wrong, the Ibanez is a nice bass, with stable tuning and all of that, and a fast neck, but for some reason my playing is a lot different with the hollow body style. My girlfriend thought I sounded better with it. I don't know, maybe I just gel better with it, more than I realize.

An objective set of ears can be valuable to have around. Sometimes there's no telling what bass will have that sweet playability to it. The SG Std.'s didn't feel as playable to me as the lower priced Epi EB-0. And I do love the sound from the Sidewinder Humbucking on the EB-0. Go with what is the one when it's magic time, and like Felix said, "Ready, PLAY!"
