Yeah, bass technology has certainly come a long way. I guess back then, you pretty much plugged into what was technically a guitar amp (especially when it had an open back,) and hoped for the best. Better or stronger speakers probably helped, too.

From what I remember, closed back cabs took off pretty quick. There were the guitar players to bass that used an open back until they were able to get into what was becoming the standard closed bass cab. Bass speakers were becoming a lot better.

Yeah, I guess bass stuff was really primitive, until they started to figure out all of the intricacies with the bass frequencies, and what works best with them. You know, PA gear was like that, too. In some ways, both bass and PA gear grew up together, maybe with bass stuff ahead of that.

Kustom was one of the trendsetters of both the Bass amp, and PA with the same name.

Yeah, I'd say they put a lot of effort into both of those, especially for that time period. You still can find the running.

I have the Rumble set to sounding like Ron's Kustom with the two 2X15 JBL cabs. I never forget the sound of that amp, with the EB-0 playing through it. Another EB-0 playing through the R100c.

Sounds good. 8) The thing you're missing is some bell bottoms, and mutton chop sideburns, though. You got to have the full aesthetic going on, especially if you're playing some narcotic music. :P

Yeah, I still play a lot of narcotic music these days. I know I may have mentioned it before, but today as I was playing, and backtracked a thought I had earlier. I realized the reason I like the feel of the Epi EB-0 over the Epi EB-3, and SG Std., the Epi nut is a jazz size @ 1.5". The Epi EB-3, and SG Std. ares closer to a precision size nut @ 1.65.

Yeah, I remember the neck on the EB-0 being on the thin side like that. I also remember it having a nice feel to it, as well. It's funny, after all of these years I'm still bummed out about that one, but I guess that's the way the cards were dealt. Speaking of Jazz Basses, I've been thinking about dusting off the Squier and taking it for a spin through the Ampeg. You know, I never played it through that amp. The last time I had plugged it in, was through the Rumble 350 combo. It's just been sitting upstairs on a stand.

I know what you mean about not acting on, or unable to act on one, and then never pursue it further.

Yeah, but I suppose it's all water under the bridge, now. The one thing that used to get me, which it's probably a bad idea to go to a music store when you're broke, is finding a particular bass that's almost one of a kind, since they no longer make them, and they play really nice, but aren't exactly uber expensive at the time, but not cheap enough to where you can buy it, or you think you can swing the payments, when music stores used to have layaway options. I don't know if they still do that, do they?

I've found two basses like that back in the day, and Ovation Magnum series bass, and a Guild B302 bass, which both of them were probably around $400 or $500 at the time, which might seem cheap now, but not so much 25 years ago. I probably could have done it, but maybe not. That also reminds me of a friend I had when I lived in Brandon, Florida, who was a guitarist and also played drums, and one time we went into this music shop around there and there was this set of amber translucent drums that looked like the ones that John Bonham had (I don't think these were Ludwig, though,) and they wanted only $300 for them, and he had the cash on him. The problem was that was also his rent money. He was seriously bummed about that, but he couldn't live in them, so what can you do? Of course, they'd be snatched up after that, never to be seen again, just like those Guild and Ovation basses. I've seen them online for sale, but now they want around or almost $2000 for the damned things.

I had a few of those situations that never went anywhere. I do remember a drummer who didn't want to ship his Rogers set back to the San Francisco area, so he took some friendly advice, and sold them to a friend.

I imagine it would be kind of a hassle to have shipped a drum set like that, and probably a cost, as well. I suppose shipping something like an SVT would even be more so.

The Rogers drum set sure, but the amps were four complete Marshall 200 full stacks, and part of what was the former LA Colosseum PA.
