The interesting thing, unless I'm looking at it wrong in your pic, is the button seems to be were one of the screws would go into for the neck plate, so it's a part of that assembly.

The pic doesn't show the detail of it sitting higher than the other three regular mounting screws. It's the top right screw in the rear of the body shot as it faces us. Image

Yeah, I can see that. I'm kind of surprised that they didn't do this with other models, if that position works good for the strap to be at.

The bolt on neck is from the little I know of Gibson manufacturing history, an Epiphone thing. SG Std.'s, and the older EB-0 etc., were, and still are all glued, and set in place. The Epiphone series of basses has impressed me more than about another name. Considering the price, and the overall QC. They may have some clunkers make it through, but so do many other brand series, at a higher more unacceptable price for it to happen. I'm serious about this Epi EB-0 of being top quality. I've done nothing to it, like tightening screws, or nuts etc. This EB-0 is a BLAST FROM THE PAST, of my Gibson 1970 EB-0. Hell, it was $349. back then, this is $269. You may not be ready, or needing a bass, but check out Epi's sometime.

Oh yeah, that's right, for some reason I forgot about the set neck thing. Maybe because I'm just used to seeing those. Then they also have the through neck with the Thunderbird models, which makes me wonder how The Ox got those Fender necks on a Thunderbird body. He must have had the bodies custom made without the necks attached, or had the necks cut off and routed out.

Those do look like they are good quality. 8)

That would be my guess as well for the swapping out necks like that. I like the Epi. strap button location, and setup. With out the long solid upper horn to attach a strap button to, it's better than the SG Std. having the strap button lower, and more centered in to the body.

The ETB92S Nylons showed up today. It took about 7 to 8 minutes to string those on the EB-0. Pics when I can do Image

When you did work for them, what basses was he using at the time? I know he's gone through different eras of gear, although he seemed to have used the Sunn amps for the longest time, until he got into the Ashdown stuff in the last part of his life/career.

I guess really the only time a strap button really works other than that, is on a Fender style instrument. Although, I wonder how that would work, if all, if you moved the strap button from a Fender type instrument and put it like that Epiphone? You know, when I had my 50's reissue Precision Bass, they also had a strap button on back of the headstock. I guess they used to make them like that, back in the day, so you'd attach the strap to the headstock. I don't remember ever trying that, though. You'd definitely need a longer strap for that to work well.

That's good they finally showed up. Did you play that bass a lot without them? I know it's kind of strange to play on rounds when you typically don't, or at least it is for me.

From what I remember, a 1965–69 Gibson Thunderbird IV bass (“Non-Reverse”-style). I wasn't really wasn't too involved with the actual gear out of the cases etc., as I was transporting to, and from the airports. Across towns. They had their own Roadies handling the gear. I was acting as an intermediary when things needed to be addressed. Parts replacements, etc. Working with their road manager.

I don't think Fenders need to have strap buttons relocated from the top horn.

No, I didn't play it too much with the factories. I didn't have too much time to play it with either strings on it. This week is going to be pretty much of a bust for playing.

Yeah, he did use that Gibson Thunderbird quite a bit, besides the Precision Bass. The guy had something like 800 basses at one time or another, maybe more, but I'm sure 99% of them probably never saw a stage, or maybe even left their cases, for all we know.

So you were sort of a separate entity than a group that was dealing directly with the group, who went with them everywhere? Say that group would go with them to the UK, Japan, or whatever, but you'd just deal with any extra things that needed to be done around the US?

You know it's funny about strings, especially the ones that are factory installed. I don't know if it's just me, or the bass doesn't feel right until you personally have your own strings put on it, even though it's most likely the factory strings are brand new, and not dead and used up, unless the bass has been sitting around a shop for awhile and a lot of people played on it. I mean even getting a bass brand new from a box, with you are the first one to play it, other than whoever dealt with it in the factory. I guess they are just a personal thing that gives you that personal touch that makes it your instrument, even if the strings are generic as hell.

Yeah, I did the US work to assist in any movement, routing of the gear. I did my part to help them. I was at a couple of the shows, and Who did I spend the majority of my time with, apparently my friend, Keith Moon. I really do believe Keith considered me a friend. The first time Keith, and myself saw each other, was a couple of years after we first met at the recording studio. I was doing a check on the gear for it arrival times, when I hear a loud yell, Hey Glenn! It was Keith. He remembered me, and my name. I was glad to see him again. He came over to me, we shook hands, and started chattering like parrots to each other. As when I first met him, we just talked about everyday things. I think Keith liked I never bugged him about the band, and that stuff. Other than one time I asked him if his drum gear was being moved ok.

Funny how you mention about strings making a bass felling more personal. True. I liked the feel of the rougher surface of the the factory rounds for a bit, they do rough up my finger tips while playing them. But I still overall prefer the smoother Nylons. The Nylons have the quicker, smoother feel to them. And the Flat strings sound from them too.Image

The reason I started using flats was to cut down on any excessive string noise that you can get from rounds, especially when recording, but then I've also learned not to hit the strings as hard over the years, so that's not as much of a big deal now. I agree about the smoothness of them, too. You also get a deeper tone with them, I think. Of course, if you want that John Entwistle type sound and attack, you're better off using rounds for that, I think.

John Entwistle's sound is good, but it's not Bruce, or Pappalardi. Just me though.

I know what you mean. It's funny he sounds so different in the studio than live, especially if you listen to something like "Live At Leeds."

The Who overall, I like more of their live songs than the studio versions. The Who studio albums I like the most are Tommy, and Who's Next. One example of a live compared to a studio version of a song I prefer, "The Magic Bus", from Live At Leeds album.

I might be able to get some time to pull on the newly strung Nylons today. Maybe get a few new shot photos of the "Electric Lady" with her Nylons on too. I'm very at ease, and at the same time very excited to have this Epi EB-0.
