I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but if I had the choice between the EKO, and the Epi, I'd definitely go with the Epi I have now. That would be somewhat based, I believe I'm a better player now, then the I had the EKO.

That's the thing about that, with playing experience. I've noticed it definitely does change your perception on a lot of things, especially gear. I think it might be because you understand everything more, than you did when you first started.

Yes that's true as well. I could be locked in to certain types, and brands over the years. There are some I'm glad I don't care to use any longer. Rickenbacker for example.

You really don't? I still have some GAS for Rics that flares up every now and then, but they aren't cheap, even used. I'm actually amazed that I was able to get a 1971 4001 bass when I did for as cheap as it was, but that was also the late 80's, and they weren't probably popular at the time, and the vintage market wasn't as expensive like it became. It also looked like someone dragged it behind a truck, so it wasn't in mint or even good condition, either. I guess chalk it up to one of those things you should have held on to, but didn't, etc.

Ricks are out of the GAS line. I don't have any desires at all to acquire them. I'm with the last bass, and amp I'll be doing. And that's fine with me.

Well, you can practically buy 4 Epiphones for the price of a Ric, so that's one hell of a value there, since you like them that much. Unless my luck changes and I start coming into a lot of money, a Ric is nothing but a GAS dream for me, anyway. I don't even know it's because of the concept and history of it, or it's something that even will gel with me. For all I know, I might not even like the feel of it, even though I do like what I've heard with other people playing one. I haven't touched one in at least 25 years, so it's not like it's something I'm used to playing around with, like a Jazz Bass, which I still have, albeit a Squier model. Say if I had the money for one, would I choose that, or another bass around the same price point? I guess I'll never know, unless I ever get to that point.

Other than the Epi I have, the only other bass I'd maybe do if I ever had the money again, the USA GL Jazz. But that ain't gonna' happen. I ain't gonna' live that much longer to waste money on that, even if I was able to swing it. Not only that but what can a Jazz do, that my Viols does now. Every day this Viola sounds so fine through the HD75. Good enough for me. Image

I remember you did like the GL Jazz a lot, but that is some bucks for it. Do they even still make a MIM version of it? I haven't even checked, but even that one was almost $900, I think.

The MIM is still available at $925., in both Black, and 3-Color Sunburst. It does come now with a Fender Deluxe Gig Bag. It didn't previously. I'll stay with the Epi Viola. I believe the Epi has better pups on it, and I'm getting spoiled again with the short scale neck. I also like the 12" radius Rosewood fretboard. The average weight of the Epi Viola probably is about two pounds less than a GL Jazz too.

Yeah, I'd agree with you with the Viola bass. The weight of it (I'm assuming it probably weighs about the same as my Douglas violin bass, give or take a pound, or less,) and that neck is a lot faster, being short scale, so that you don't have to stretch your arm out as much. The interesting thing about that is you also get more frets, even though it's a shorter neck. Fenders have 20 frets typically, and that has 22 frets. You get an extra "E" and "F," if you want or need it. I guess the fret spacing is tighter with the short scale than the typical long scale of the Fender? I never really tried comparing the spacing between the two. What's really funny is a Danelectro Longhorn bass has a 24 fret neck, even though it's a short scale. Those upper frets are really tightly spaced together, though. Pretty much like a 6-stringer. I've played on that bass a few times.

Some of that has to do with how the neck is set into the body. The Epi Viola weighs in at 7.6 pounds. Like you said, your Douglas should be really close to the Epi. Danelectro have always been odd basses. Jack Bruce used Danelectro while he was in Cream at times. The Epi EB-3 did have a long neck, and a stretch.

The Danelectro also hangs on the strap kind kind of weird, because of the location of the strap hookups. It kind of makes the neck seem longer than it actually is, if that makes sense. Still, a nice playing bass.

I never really messed with them myself, but they are good guitars, and basses.

I've played both their guitars and basses, and they are nice playing instruments. I guess the thing with the Longhorn Bass, is the strap goes on kind of like the same way it does on an EB-0 or EB-3 bass, but the design of the body is obviously different with those long pieces, so it seems like it kind of goes back further in the body, but it probably doesn't. There isn't any headstock balance issues, though, since that headstock is really small for a bass, especially with the guitar sized tuners. If your used to playing a Jazz or Precision style bass, it's certainly an adjustment, but then again, so are the EBs and violin type basses, too.
