Post subject:  Paint on a 1960 Fender Jazz Bass

This is my first post on this forum. FYI...

My father worked for Fender in the early 60's, he just turned 79. He has an all original 1960 Jazz Bass that he is wanting to sell. In taking pictures for a listing we removed the neck and the neck pocket is painted black with a neck shim on top. He is the only owner so I know it was not refinished. However, I have gotten comments that it looks refinished because of this paint. Can anyone chime in on if paint in the neck pocket is normal (or possible) for this guitar? You can see our listing on Reverb here:

Thank you for your time!

I never see that kind of paint in neck pocket. I'm not an expert

Paint sticks were screwed into the neck pockets to hold the body while being spray painted at the factory and there is usually some overspray, but this neck pocket has very obviously been brush painted later. Typically neck pockets are bare wood and contain some vital information such as name stamps of factory workers and inspectors stamps. Often there may be something handwritten in pencil. There appears to be some writing and or numbers impressed into the wood under the paint such as might be made by a ball point ink pen, which is something factory workers would never have used. Some owners were known to put their names and address and sometimes a social security number as positive identification marks in case of theft. It makes no sense whatsoever for the owner that put them there to paint over them.

Have your bass inspected and appraised by a well known authority such as George Gruhn in Nashville.
