Is the new Fender 70's Jazz Bass (not the 75 reissue) much better than the Squier Vintage Modified 70's Jazz Bass?

What is the difference between the Fender 70's Jazz Bass and the Fender American Vintage 75 Reissue Jazz Bass?

In general Fender are supposed to be better than Squier, but The VM is top of the line for Squier, and the craftsmanship is really good, pretty close to CIJ compared to MIM. The '70s Jbass is CIK, is not suppose to be a reissue but a period "vibe" type bass. It's gotten great reviews in Bass Player magazine. I've not played it, there is a thread on this if you search it.

As far as '70s v. '75, the 75 is reissue and period correct. '75 is MIA, and the '70s is CIK.

Hope I was able to answer some of your questions.

I think the CI stands for "Crafted In..."

So CIJ would stand for Crafted In Japan. CIK would be...Korea? I'm just guessing on that one.

Hi, folks. I was interested in this thread.

I own a Vintage Modified Squire and a Geddy Lee, and I actually like the Squire better, which is causing me some angst. The Squire VM Jazz is an absolutely magnificent bass, and the pick ups seems to kick the Geddy in the pants.

I am actually considering swaping the pick ups. Have any of you ever had similar opinions about Squire versus Fender? Coventional wisdom is most Fenders but the Mexican are better then Squire, but I think the Squire VM is better than most Fenders I have played as for tone. Is there something wrong with me? :-)

It's what you prefer, nothing wrong with that. As far as pickups, I was going to pu EMG HZ on my VM, due to my great experience with EMG, but I've held back, cause the bass sound good with the Duncan Designed and sounds like the Fender '70s Jazz Bass. Plus I'm out of $$$ due to picking up the Squier Deluxe V Active.

I do disagree about the VM sounding better than the Geddy, but if that is the sound you like, the Geddy has that '70s vibe to it too, it's pretty close - to me in the way the sound.

Hi, Power. Thanks.

I do keep hearing good things about the EMG. I guess the main difference between the VM and GL is the VM has such a powerful sound, and the tone nob seems to have a much wider range of tone, from screaching highs to thundering lows. The GL is a little muddier. I was just suprised when I played them back to back. I think the good way to look at it is: I am so very impressd with what Squire is putting out. I should probably keep the GL the way it is!

I am kind of new to the F-style jazz basses, so I'm learning. I've had a 4001 for years and wanted to experiment with F style basses. I love the bottom end of both the VM and GL. Now I "get" what people have been saying all these years.

Thanks again for your reply.

Anytime sir. Bottom end is where it's at when it comes to Jazz Basses. The P bass has nice thunder too. I like the both to tell you the truth. My '87 has both pups - P/J. I leave both on max ans set up the true volume of my amp.

:D When I first got the Squier Vintage Modified fretless I was amazed with the sound and feel! Playability was so….UNREAL! I enjoyed it so much until I started to wonder how a MIM fretless jazz bass fender would sound and so I got one! So in my experience, the difference between my Squier fretless and my Fender MIM fretless is the Fender have more sustain/louder harmonics than the Squier and the neck of the fender feels thicker than the Squier, the Fender MIM can also stand heavier gauge strings than the Squier, I had to tighten the truss rod after installing Rotosound Flatwound string(standard Jazz bass guage) to my Squier because the neck bowed a little bit. But still the squire is still a very good bass for the price! Here’s a video of my fretless vintage modified Squier, I changed the knobs with the standard jazz bass knobs, installed a pearl pick guard and replaced the bridge with a badass II for the aggressive tone! Check it out (percussive style slap!) ENJOY! 8) http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseacti ... d=35735220
