I have a MIM 2000 jazz bass. I am thinking of putting a thumbrest on it and have noticed how many different positions they have been installed on. Any opinions before I take a chance and drill on my baby. Thanx--Fred

The locations are due to the Precision bass being electric.
Below the strings (on a right hand model) were done because it was felt that the bassists switching from upright to electric would use their thumbs to pluck the strings for a more 'upright' sound, resting their fingers on the bar below. Fullerton called it a "tug bar". In 74 the 'above the strings' location started being used, modern players were removing the lower bars to accomidate newer styles of playing. Moving it to the top for ones thumb to rest on fell in line with the styles.
So theres the reasons, where you put it is up to your style of play.

EDIT: i'm not in anyway affiliated with Fender, but i did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Are you planning to use the thumbrest as a thumbrest, for placing your thumb on it? If you do, you could also consider placing pickup covers (ashtrays) instead to place your thumb on.

I have those on my CS 1966 Jazz Bass, and it plays very well, and looks cool as well.
