For those that don't know, I am a fan of GHS strings. The last three sets have been: Pressurewounds, Hex Core Bass Boomers, and Round Core Bass Boomers. JustStrings is running a GHS sale, and I thought I would just pick up a new set of the roundcore Boomers. I've been running medium gauge GHS Balanced Nickels (4M-NB) on my American Professional Precision since they came out a year or so ago. I like the seriously deep low mid growl the Balanced Nickels have plus they last a good six months vs 90 days for Boomers. So I ordered the light 4L-NB set for my American Standard Jazz. Man am I ever glad I did! Absolutely Killer.

I've been thinking about trying out some GHS strings, especially the flatwounds. There's a set of Bass Boomers on an Ibanez CT series bass we have, that were installed by a music shop, when it was sent there for repairs, and they seem nice for rounds. That pressurewound set might be another possibility, as well.

GHS Precision Flats are to my ear the closest sounding strings to the original V.C. Squier wound Fender Flats. GHS was formed by three friends that had worked for V.C. Squier in Battle Creek, Michigan. I've had a set on my '76 Precision for 5+ years.

Pressurewounds are a very easy stringset to love, especially on a Jazz.

Bass Boomers are America's Power Rock string, and as such are GHS biggest seller. They are brash; rude, and in your face. The roundcore Boomers are much more polite. Both sound superb in their own right.

I remember that I did have a set of GHS Brite Flats many years ago, and I liked those. That's another option, as well.

An interesting historical fact about Brite Flats is that when Leo Fender had finished developing his Music Man Stingray and was getting ready to bring it to market, he contacted GHS for strings. Not just any strings, but a type unheard of before that would come to be called 'ground (or half) round'. This is the innovative design that would become 'Brite Flats'. I have asked Jon Moody of GHS for factual clarity as to who first invented ground rounds, but he hasn't provided any. Is this something Leo Fender just dreamed up as the best of both flats and rounds?

I didn't know that about those. I've been debating about whether I should go back to rounds, or stay with flats, so maybe that could be the best option.

One string comes to mind, Nylons.

GHS makes those, too.

I played the AC Jazz today, and Damn that Jazz plays fine. I may order the La Bella 750N strings just to keep until I want, or need to change out the ETB92 D'Addario Nylons. From what I've seen, and heard today, the ETB92's might be on the Jazz for quite a while. 8)

Speaking of nylons and GHS, they use flats as the base string before wrapping them. I've heard that other brands might use rounds as the base, or at least one brand did. Do you know if the D'Addario ones do that?

D'Addario is a round core, but they put out a Flat sound. La Bella I think is the same as the D'Addario Nylons.

Yeah, I thought they were usually rounds underneath. I'm not sure what Rotosounds are like with those. I think they were the first ones to come out with them, though.

Yeah, that's what is best, when you come down to it. 8)

Both D'Addario, and La Bella Nylons are rounds under the Nylon.
