Hello new to the forum here.

I have a 1999 USA standard jazz bass. The pickups are not as hot as on my precision basses. I just thought it was the difference in the basses, but then I got a ‘64 reissue jazz and noticed the pickups on it were significantly hotter than the 99. I was wondering is this common or is mine having issues.

I have also thought about changing to the FENDER CUSTOM SHOP CUSTOM ’60S JAZZ BASS PICKUPS and wondered if anyone had experience with those or any recommendations.

Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the forum thebfly. Good first post. As you may know when Fender upgraded the American Standards in 2012 they went to their Custom Shop 60's p'ups. They are an excellent choice, and that's what I have in my Jazz. They are sensitive to string choice, so finding a stringset that you like and also sounds good through your p'ups is a journey of trial and error. One set I really love is GHS Round Core Bass Boomers.

Set up is critically important, and cannot be overstated. If you've never had a luthier set your action at the nut and check your frets for level this would be the perfect time to get that done while installing the p'ups and new stringset. Be sure to have the neck relief; string & pickup heights all set to Fender factory specs as the best starting point for further custom tweaking to your liking. The best sounding pickup height is usually lower than you might think. Don't worry about output. That's what your amp is for. Hot overwound pickups give up some of the sweet full range tonality of a stock wind. The Custom Shops are both full and sweet. Very evenly balanced too.

Thank you for letting me know about the pickups. I’ll check on getting a luthier to go over the setup or check it myself against the Fender specs. Thanks again!!

No problem, you're welcome thebfly. If you have the tools and machinist ruler, and are both competent and confident in your skills, by all means check out your setup yourself. That's always a good starting point. Your jazz came stock from the factory with good quality American made AlNiCo V pickups. The only real reason to change is you just don't like the tone, and not the output. One of the easiest ways to change tone is to change to a different stringset that provides the tone characteristics you desire.

Here's a little something I learned from Lindy Fralin (whose jazz pickups are world famous). He got complaints from some of his customers that his pickups were losing magnetism and therefore output. Come to find out that they were taping on the pole pieces with a magnetic screwdriver to test output and evenness of volume from pole-to-pole. This had disastrous consequences. So don't do that.
