Well, at least they offer Precision basses with Jazz necks on them, so you don't have to deal with the Precision neck, if you want the Precision sound. I've also seen people put Jazz necks on Precision basses.

I really don't need a precision sound. The Jazz Works well.

Yeah, I still got one of those around, too. The Squier one is upstairs. I picked it up yesterday, come to think of it.

Yeah, it's not going anywhere, at least. I did put a Leo Quan bridge on it, which did give it a tremendous improvement. I have also used it to record, since it was the one bass that was the best for me to use at the time.

That sounds like a prime player. Especially since you recorded with it. I personally like a Jazz sound in the studio, but that's just me. Violin / Viola's sound fine as well, depending on the strings strung on them.

They are certainly different, as far as sounds go, which isn't a bad thing. It gives you a lot more tonal options. You got to have that hollow body to play The Animals, like "We Got To Get Out Of This Place." Except, Chas Chandler played on an Epiphone Ravoli bass, and maybe a Gibson EB-2, which were essentially the same basses.

I think the bass player for The Association played an EB-2 as well. I always liked the bass sounds he had in the song, "Windy". That's a song that stay's in my head for weeks at a time.

I can see why that sound can get stuck in your head for weeks. It does that. :P

That was a live version of Windy. The original record version is about half that length. 45 RPM records from back then, usually didn't over 2:30 - 3:00 in time. The radio stations wouldn't play any songs over that running time. Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone " was cut as it was playing. It got to a point while playing, and the station just faded it out. But then, The Beatles released "Hey Jude", in one version as well. You didn't fukk with The Beatles. "Hey Jude" was played in it's entirety.

I remember hearing about that, with AM radio. The Doors "Light My Fire" was edited, and I've heard the edited version on some station years ago (obviously, not back then, since I wasn't born until 1971.) Then FM came out and it changed the whole ball game with that.

And now the internet has changed the game again. In some ways I see it as a step backwards.

If you look at the history of recorded music and break it down to storage media you see how the quality has changed.

You start with the single. Since you had limited space if you were recording you had to pick your best 2 songs to record and put out. Look at how many classic songs came out of that era.

Then the EP came out so an artist had about 20 minutes or so of space to fill up so they picked their best 20 minutes of music but were still picky. Look at the classic EP's that came out (Meet the Beatles comes to mind).

Then there was the LP more space for music. You still had to pick your best material but you had about 35 minutes to work with. Now think of all of the classic albums that came out. I'm still blown away by the fact Dark Side of the Moon is 45 minutes.

Then Double Albums. 90 minutes. You could be more expansive with it but still had a little time restriction. You could also be a little less picky. But think of Quadraphenia, Freak Out, The White Album, Frampton Comes Alive.

Then Cassettes had up to 120 minutes. Sometimes cassettes had bonus tracks that weren't on the album (The Real Thing by Faith No More comes to mind). You still didn't have to be as selective you could have some clunker tracks here and there. I can't think of many classic cassette era albums.

Then the CD came along with 75(?) minutes to fill and an easy way to skip over tracks you don't like. You could be less selective about what you put on there. Classic albums were released with "Bonus Tracks" that to be honest more often than not there were good reasons those tracks were unreleased. There were still some (now) classic albums but not as many Pearl Jam Ten comes to mind.

Now in the digital age. Infinite storage options, affordable quality recording equipment, and short attention spans. Now anyone can put out anything with no filter and limit themselves to singles because our attention spans have shrank to the point that that is all we can handle. The market is flooded with crap because of the recording and delivery mediums are so large that we don't have to limit ourselves to our best material.

C/S,
Rev J
