Everything went fine. The case was in the same condition I left it in. I eyeballed the Epi really close, not a nick, or dent on it. Put it the case, and brought it home. Plugged it into the amp, and it plays fine.

That's cool. I'll bet probably no one, or barely anyone even messed with it. I think if anyone was looking for a hollow body that went in there, odds are likely they would have snatched it up.

All the Epi had was just some finger print smudges in a few places on it. The bass, and the case did really look the same as it did when I brought it in to them. I've changed my mind about having two Violin / Viola Basses. it's ok having them both. No different than when I had two, or more Jazzes at one time. The two do have a different feel to them. The neck thickness, a bit of the body, and the weight. To me anyway, the Hofner plays a little quicker than the Epi. They both have a binned body, and neck. And the Epi has well dressed frets, like the Hofner.

How much difference in the sound between the two, would you say? I know there is a huge price difference between the two, that's for sure.

There's a bit of finer, smoother tone from the Hofner, all around. How close are they to each other, my hearing isn't that good anymore. That harmonics must be from the bodies wood make up on the 500/1. I do have to admit, I am more biased about the playing, and the sounds of this 500/1, over the first 500/1 I had. I like the Sunburst finish on this one better also. The first ones Sunburst was a bit lighter. This 500/1s Sunburst finish has a bit more character to it.

Well, I imagine the Hofner should be like that, considering the cost and construction going into it. Still, for being made in a Chinese factory, probably with CNC machines, the Epiphone seems to be really well made. They seem to have actually given a crap about it's quality control.

Yeah, this one has a problem in the build of it though, that will cost more than it's worth to fix, so it's going back. It's ok, the Hofner is fine. As it should be.

There was a poor fit into the neck pocket that I missed, that screwed every thing up on it. The neck needs to be removed, the neck pocket reworked, and the neck reset into place. IKES!!!!

There is an enormous difference between the two basses. I honestly didn't realize it until I played the Hofner again, after playing the Epi. Everything about he Hofner, I think is better on this Hofner than the first one I had. The feel of it, and the tones do work better.

The Epi is out of here, and that will be it for them. I really don't need three basses anyway. If I can't do it with the two I have, too bad for me.

Yeah, well at least the Epiphone wasn't better than the Hofner, then that would have been a serious issue because of the cost of it. How did you even find out about the neck issue? Was the neck giving you some sort of problem?

The sound wasn't quite right, and adjusting the neck was impossible. It was clacking a bit. That's when I figured I better give this guy I know a call to ask him to take a look at it. Not even 20 seconds, and he saw, and showed me the problem. I admitted, I didn't really look at the neck joint on it. Usually I do check it.

That's the one down side to the hollow body, you don't have as many options for adjustments, and that sort of thing, since it's essentially an acoustic instrument. If there's an issue, it can be difficult to fix, and costly doing so. It's not like swapping a part out for a P-Bass, or something like that. Of course, the upside is if you want that particular sound, that's how you get it. I guess that goes with anything, with up and downsides, though.

Yep Paul, that's a definite down side to the set neck. But when they are assembled correctly, and set right, they really do put out the great sounds. the Violin sounds have awoken an old mans ears again to the sounds I loved in the past.

Also, you can't complain about the weight, either. I remember the first time I ever picked one up, I was afraid it was fragile, since there was nothing to it.
