I've been thinking of trying some Rotosound Steve Harris Flatwounds. Just wondered if anyone else has tried them and what they think of them?

I use the cheapest strings I can find. I can't afford the luxury of trying out different types. (typically the Diaddario XL's are the cheapest and at least to my ears sound fine). I have had times when I didn't change the strings for over a year.

However a funny story. My guitar player called me from GC and asked if I needed new bass strings since we were recording that night. I said "sure" since I knew he wouldn't ask for the money back..lol.

For some unbeknownst reason the dipstick got me a 5 string set..my basses are all 4 string, I don't even own a 5 string bass. However, since they were free..(and new, rare for me)..I put the 4 heavier strings on...the low string was so fat it barely fit in the nut slot and would fall off sometimes. And it was hard as heck to play. But.....

I ended up recording with it..sounded fine go figure. "When you're broke...you're a joke". That's me for now. When my band gets signed I will ask for a string endorsment...now that would be sweet !

i normally use the orange box rotosounds. I want to buy a set of GHS Bass Boomer though, just to check out the sound. they are cheaper so i might use them instead of the rotosounds.

Has anyone here tried the GHS Boomers before???
what were they like??

Not saying they are bad, but I've not have any luck with D'addarios and GHS strings in the past. I've used Fender, Slinky's, Rotosound, DR, Dean Markleys, Labellas, etc. But GHS and D'addarios just no luck in sound and in how long they last. That's just me tho, it seems like other people here like them.

Yeah I kind of agree.

The diaddarios however at least for me seem to last....usually. But the price point is why I use them..no other reason per say.

Many years back I did try the boomers. I thought they sounded great out of the package (very bright and alive)..but seemed to lose life very very quickly..hence I was dissapointed with them in the longrun..

My personal exoerience.

I like DR the most, but kind of the pricey side. I've been happy with Fender 7350M, but I do like stainless steels tho, so it might be too bright for other people.

I have tried all different types, but nothing, and when I say nothing............I mean nothing comes close to giving me the perfect sound like SMITH BASS STRINGS, I use the Rock Masters/Medium ........45-65-85-105, around 23.40 per pack but they last forever and stay in tune very well. Try and buy, don't be shy, put em on and fly, and don't ask why!
I was using the Ken Smith Burner Nickels for a long time, but lately I've been using Dunlops light.....40-65-80-100-120 and they remind of the Ken Smith Rock Masters

Now all the basses have Fender 7350M on 'em. .45, .65, .85, .105, and the 5 string's B string is .125. I love stainless steel string sound.

I used to use GHS Bass Boomers, but recently I've made the switch to DR Hi-Beam stainless steel. They're a little pricy, but the sound can't be beat and they last longer than any other string I've used.

I've used DRs before. I really liked it, it last a long time too. I had the Black Beauties, but the finish wore out way before the strings. So no more DRs for me. I do like them, I would use them again, it's pricey like you said.
