I own a '68 Fender Jazz Bass. When bought it (second hand, almost fifteen years ago) it had DiMarzio pickups in it, the cream colored ones. As my bass is red with a tortoise pickguard, the cream colored pickups just didn't appeal to me. So I swapped them out for a set of Seymour Duncan Basslines. Then after a few years, I got tired of the hum and noise and I swapped them out again for a set of EMG's.
All three of these sets drropped right in. A little tight for the battery in the EMG's, but it fit. When I put a set of Samarium Cobalts in my Strat I thought, "Man, this is it!! No noise and great sound as well" I had to put these in my bass and dump the battery. Wrong!!
The bridge pickup could be pressed in but it was so tight it wouldn't need adjusting screws because it was stuck halfway in the cavity with no room for it to move. The neck pickup wouldn't go in at all. It was close to a 1/4 inch too long!!
I called the Fender Tech and his reply was 'it is what it is, they fit modern basses. He wasn't even aware that they wouldn't fit older basses.
It bothers me that after having three other pickup brands in this bass that drop in with no modification, Fender can't make one to fit.
Anyone else run into this problem, let me know.

That's a bummer ! I've never had a problem like that !Whats the difference between the old pickups and the samarium cobalts? Can you post a picture with both pickups side by side to see ?

I took some pictures of my bass with the EMG's and the SCN's. The neck SCN is about an 1/8 inch longer than the EMG's. Not sure how to post pictures on this forum. I posted them on my webite and placed a link here.

The sides of the pickups where the screws go into , are those the same on both pickups ? Because if they do you can route the pick up cavity a little more to make the EMG's fit .

The EMG's are fine. They are in there now. They dropped right in. As well as the Duncan Basslines and DiMarzio's. It's the SCN's that don't fit and I am not routing my old bass. This was just to let anyone who owns an old bass know that these won't fit.

I dont know why I thought that you wanted to install EMG's :? . Guess I read too fast and didnt notice that it is a 68 jazz bass .Forget about what I said on routing the body , I wouldnt do that .

I don't have a problem with the sound of the EMG's. My issue is about having a battery that could fail in the middle of a set.

Also, the control cavity is so narrow that I can only use Duracells, as they are slightly thinner than other batteries. In short, I just want to dump the battery and still get no noise.

I wonder if the vintage noiseless are the same dimensions as the SCN's?

I spoke to Gary Waugh, the fender rep in my area, and he's going to look into it. Maybe fender will make a set of SCN's that fit older Jazz basses without having to route the cavities,

I still haven't heard back from Fender whether they will be introducing an SCN Jazz pickup set that will fit older Jazz basses. I thought Fender would be more supportive of their customers. I still wonder why Seymour, EMG and DiMarzio can issue pickups that fit, but Fender can't. The thing is, I really love the SCN's in my Strats and Teles.
