Just wondering:
I purchased a MIM J-Bass back in March 08. I'm sitting here playing, when suddenly my G string (no pun intended) starts buzzing. I look everywhere for a problem when I noticed that the nut has completely broken off under the g and part of the d string. Is this a freak accident? Yes, I bought it new from a GC. I'm taking it in tomorrow. I just want to be ready for any responses I may get. I'm expected a repair under warranty.

It should be repaired under warranty. The problem you might encounter is that they will inspect it (GC) and tell you it was abuse of some sort - like dropping it, or falling off a stand, or whatever. Keep calm and explain everything to them what happened. Don't start ranting and raving if you don't get what you want, staying calm might get you further and GC deal with you better. Good luck.

Aside from banging the nut on something, the most common cause of this is a larger-gauge string being used than the nut was originally cut for.

Happens ALL the time with less experienced bassists experimenting with different strings.

My guess is that this will not be repaired under warranty, but let us know.

Good luck.

No need to rant and rave. GC took real good care of me. BTW, who else went to their GC after hours "private sale"? I met the Store Manager at this event. When he saw me today, he immediately got involved so my problem would be resolved quickly.

Sorry that you busted a nut. I'm sure it will happen again.
