So, I use a pick and my new bass produces static noise, pretty loud crackling that would not work in a live setting. I know the picking is the source; it doesn't happen with finger picking, which I'm still not very good at doing.

It's not as frequent or as loud with the active circuit switched off.

I had the same issue some years ago with a Godin electric. It had no shielding under the pickguard. After applying copper shielding the noise was less pronounced but still an issue. Later I made a pickguard from wood and the problem was solved.

The new J bass had no shielding on the back of the pickguard either and after copper shielding I'm still getting static noise, though it seems to be less frequent. I don't want to use a hand made wood pickguard - they never come out perfect, and the original black pickguard on the surf pearl looks really good.

I'm using flatwounds. Will try rounds soon.

Anybody else have this problem?

I have an older Schecter 5 string with a 9v preamp circuit. It has NEVER made static with all the picking I do. I'm bummed about this, my first Fender bass. Come to think of it, I've never had the problem with any of the Fender electric guitars I've owned over the years.

Perplexed and dismayed.......
