Hi,

I have just purchased a second hand 93' Power Jazz Bass Special, a very nice instrument. however it did not come with any manual and I was wondering what all the knobs do.

The upper most knob (nearest the strings) of the four knobs is the volume, I believe that one of the knobs is a pickup selector, one is probably tone and I think I one is related to using the bass is active mode.

I know it might sound simple  but I am not sure which knob does which task.

Thanks

I have an '88 Power Jazz Bass Special, 3 knobs and 2 toggle. Top knob is volume for both pups, the one under that is for tone on the p pup, and the one next to it is for tone on the j pup. The thick toggle switch is for the pups select, center is for both, top is for p pup, and low is for j pup. The small toggle is for the preamp, 2 position, on/off IIRC, I have that disabled on mine when I got the EMGs put in due to no preamps on the EMGs.

I hope it's correct info. It's a nice solid bass. With the EMGs it sounds as good if not better than my '05 Ibanez BTB with soapbars on 'em. :D

Hi,

From playing it is slightly different from the yours. The knob nearest the strings is the volume, the knob nearest the neck is the pick up selector.

The other two knobs impact tone, one should be tone the other is supposed to be a power boost to certain frequecies, however they both sound to have a similar impact so it is difficult to tell them apart.

Thanks again and you are right it is a very fine sounding fender

Kinda figured it would be. Mine was an '88, I thought they'd stop producing the Power Jazz Bass Special in '90. Mine was also an MIJ. Have fun with it too bud! :D

Thanks for your feedback.

I have all the knobs worked out. It was difficult to tell the difference between using the tone and the power boost knob on the bass sounds. However when I tried it on the treble end then it was much easier to determine.

My only issue now is slight feedback/interference when I turn the tone to maximise the treble.

But apart from that the bass is great very easy to play a a great tone.

Thanks again for the feedback

Hi,

It's quite confusing but my model Fender seems to be the Japanese Power Jazz Special from 93 (serial number O and six digits), my model has 22 frets.

In this model only one knob is the volume, one knob is for pickup selector, one is for tone and one is for frequency boost.

In the low end range it is difficult to hear the difference between the tone and the frequency boost, however if I turn up treble there is a distinct difference. So when I originally tested i was just listening to the low end which led to my confusion.

My only issue now is that when I turn up the treble there is a distinct hum, which I will need to get fixed. :(

Thanks again for the feedback :)

Mine's also a MIJ. 3 knobs and 2 toggle switches tho, like I've said before on here. Play around with it, see if you can get the tone to come out with your amp instead that adjust it from there. G/L in doing so.

Hi,
Another "quick" question. regarding my Power Jazz Bass Special. Has anyone had any experience with changing the pickups? I am getting microphonic feedback, (especially when I turn up the treble) and it seems that the current Fender pickups I have are "sealed" and thus they need to be swapped out :x to fix the problem.

I was wondering what is the best type of pickup to change them too, especially given that the Power Jazz is semi-active i.e. it uses a 9v battery to add extra bass.

Thanks :)

I've had my pups replaced this summer with EMGs active. The original pups were active and also had Fender preamp on it. The EMGs I got I didn't order them with the preamps. I also stayed w/the 9v instead of splicing more wires to get the 18v (2 9v batt). I like how mind sounds too, with the J pup, it's high and nice for slap, with the p pup, low/fat sound, with both it's really nice.

Always good to hear what other people have done.

I think that I will go out and replace my pickups with SD Hot Stack for the Jazz Bridge pickup and a SD Hot Precision, from doing some homework this appears to be a good combination at a reasonable price and will work with the Power Jazz.

Thanks again for the feedback :D

Good luck with the new pups. I would also recommend a new bridge, my original one was so beaten up from gigs, the new BadAss III brigde I use now works great.

I also get a hum/buzz when I turn the tone right up which is easily drowned out once playing. I thought it was a natural thing.
