Hi folks, decided to pull the trigger on an AVRI at my local guitar shop as they have reduced the prices on last of this range due to the arrival of the 'American Original' series. So this is an 'American Vintage '74 Jazz' - but there are a couple of anomalies that are curious.
1) Tug bar is below the strings - not in the thumb rest position above the strings.
2) Tort pick guard - usually these are black on the 74' AVRI

Everything else stacks up as it should - certificate of authenticity with the right model number, serial number matches the stamp on the neck plate. Neck is right profile (U shape) and pickup in the right 70's position. All case candy, retro manual, foam mute all present.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

A clarification, if you please: is it a brand new, or a pre-owned bass?

In the latter case, the most obvious explanation is, a previous owner replaced the pickguard & the thumb rest.
The ones still advertized as new all seem to have the 'black pg/thumb rest up' combo - but I'll give a slight chance for FSR's or other limited editions, and for 'last-of-the-model-series-specialities'; those are known to happen with Fender, sometimes.

But you could check the serial number with Fender Consumer Relations (via the support pages), they can usually provide the original specs for US/post-1993 instruments.

Agreed on the serial number search. Would be interesting if there are extra holes in the body above the strings.
I googled images on '74 JB and found a few in tortoise with the thumb block below the strings, but not many, and couldn't get any hits on the reissue in that configuration.
Maybe it was sold as new, but was actually a return and the first buyer made the change?

I certainly remember a lot of tortoise on 70s basses growing up, to the point that when someone says "Jazz Bass" I've always pictured Tortoise on 3-tone burst.
