XLN was having a half off sale so I ended up buying "Classic Color" and "Drum Shaper" for about $70.

I've also been thinking about the Waves Abbey Road Tape plugin. That's also on sale for about $50 I'm not sure for how long though.

That sounds like a good deal for that.

Especially given the production aesthetic I want to go for. For example:

Listen to how the Steely Dan sample is processed, the drum sound is kinda trashy etc. It's not "Shiny" at all. In the work I plan to do I want to eschew samples as much as possible. I've seen a couple of sample breakdowns of this dudes work and he will grab from Sun Ra, Frank Zappa, Indian Music, Terry Reilly, The Electric Prunes, Gentle Giant etc. That kinda inspired me to just let go of the whole "Genre" concept and what is correct for the genre at hand and be able to throw in anything.

Yeah, I get where you're coming from with that.

That's pretty cool. I like Sun Ra, and stuff like that. 8)

It's especially interesting to hear Sun Ra used in that context.

I think a lot of musicians view Hip Hop as the "Enemy" so to speak due to the reliance on samples and getting ripped off.

Personally I kinda respect the whole "Crate Digging" mentality searching out obscure vinyl to grab. The process is a lot like musique concrete, or collage art.

Well, I think now a days, it's evolved to where people are incorporating their own instruments into it, instead of just strictly sampling. That probably has to do with royalty expenses, and stuff like that. That, and things change. You have younger generations listening to all kinds of music and it winds up being blended like some sort of gumbo. I've heard a lot of alternative/indie bands using trap beats, and things like that. I've seen this one hip hop dude rapping while playing acoustic drums with some dude playing bass.

That's probably Anderson Paak. There has been a sub movement going on in Jazz since about the early 90's with Greg Osby continuing up through now with musicians like Kamasi Washington, and Robert Glasper rebelling against the classicist movement like Wynton Marsallis.

Yeah, the sample/fee thing is what happened to the Beastie Boys.

They spent $250,000 for sample clearances on "Pauls Boutique" and 30 years later they were still getting sued for copyright infringement. If you noticed the next album they did after "Pauls Boutique" "Check Your Head" you'll notice they started playing instruments again (remember that the Beasties started as a punk band.

Yeah I think I can pretty much back off on buying plugins for a while. Between Vinyl, Tape, Classic Color, and the built in Bit Reduction presets in Ableton I can combine and get a wide range of cool lo fi colors. Now I have to get back to work learning Ableton.
