That's true, then maybe I might get that Ampeg head. It would even be better if AMS had a discount one for sale, which they haven't had one in a while. You know, open box, scratch and dent, whatever. You get good deals on that stuff.

Sam Ash can be a source of open box Ampeg heads at times.

I've noticed that a couple of times when I've shopped around there. I wish there was one in Rhode Island, but there isn't. We've been to the one in White Plains, NY a couple of times, when we did some NYC shows, and that was close to where my girlfriend's mom lives.

On Sam Ash Direct, online they show open box items too. GC.com does the same.

Yeah, sometimes I browse that site. I did order a Hartke practice combo from them, that was an open box item, I think back in 2007, or around there. It wound up being a problematic POS, so I donated it. It was one of those B20 models, or whatever they were called. It didn't sound bad, tone wise, but then starting acting up a few months after I got it, farting out, and whatnot, every now and then. I've pretty much avoided the brand since then.

I haven't had too much fun with Hartke products either. About the only one that I did somewhat well with was that Kickback KB15 Combo.

I will say on their behalf, that 4 x 10" cab with the aluminum cone speakers is pretty decent sounding rig. I played through two of those and a GK 800RB head in NYC, not long after I moved up here, and that was a great set up. Those were some of the original Guild/Hartke cabs, if not the first ones, since it was in NYC, where I do believe that started.

I just didn't get the sound I wanted with the aluminum Hartke's. I think they play better when they have a lot of volume on them.

I've only used them in that live situation in a club, so I don't know how they'd respond otherwise. It could be like that deal that I had with the 18", unless it was blasting loud. I have a theory to why that speaker wasn't working like the ones like Bill Wyman used, other than the fact that he was playing in clubs or theaters before they got the Ampeg stuff and went bigger. That speaker that I replaced it with was really designed to go into PA subwoofer systems to throw out a bunch of low end, and those speakers back in the day were designed more for instrument use, although I'm sure they had their issues, too.

I do think in the case of a speaker that is primarily a PA intended, it's not going to work like the Sunn Colosseum PA heads Leslie West used in Mountain. Volumes in larger venues, do require that different sound system than smaller ones. It's like going into The Houston Astro Dome with an Ampeg V-4B/SVT-212AV. It sounds great in a studio, but not there without a PA hook up.

That's true. The size of the area does play a factor in the size of the equipment needed.

Back in the 60's it was a challenge on getting that power as the venues grew in size. Sunn, the amp that made a difference.

All of that was in it's infancy, including the whole concept of the huge rock concert. I'm guessing the whole Beatlemania thing is probably what kicked that off.

When the Beatles played Shea Stadium, they almost couldn't be heard because of the large stadium, and the thousands of screaming kids.

Find the live album from the Hollywood Bowl... they couldn't even hear themselves. I don't know if there was a problem with their monitors or if they simply didn't have monitors because the venue was traditionally "stage mixed"
