Yeah, I remember Zayres. I used to go there when I was a kid with my parents. I think about 75% of my Christmas and birthday presents came from that place, at least where toys where concerned. They had a lot there, from what I remember, or it just seemed like that when you're a little kid.

There were several of them in the Fort Lauderdale area. The one on Broward Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale, had a very good record section in that store. Jefferson's was another type of a lower priced department store. Western Auto, and Jefferson's were part of the Montgomery Ward store chain.

I remember Western Auto, but I'm not too sure about Jefferson's. It kind of sounds familiar. When was that around?

Jefferson's, if I remember correctly, was the 60's up till about the mid 80's when Montgomery Ward stated to close down the Jefferson's. WoolCo went about the same away, as when the parent company, F.W. Woolworths Company shut down.

I did a fair amount of shotgun, and rifle acquisitions at Bell Sports back then.

I'm not sure if they have Jefferson's in St. Pete, but the name does ring a bell, so it's possible. If I did go to one, I would have been a little kid, and it would have been in the 70's. I do remember Woolworths. Those lasted throughout the 80's, from what I remember.

Was that a chain, or just an independent store?

It was a chain, but I'm not sure how large it was.

I worked at the Woolworths in down town Fort Lauderdale for a short time in the summer of 1969. What a trip that was. Working at a 5 & 10 was crazy. Chasing after parakeets that got out of their cage, etc.

They sold parakeets there?

They sold parakeets, canaries, and gold fish. 7/11's Used to sell shotgun shells, and .22Lr ammo. At least they did in most of southeast FL at that time.

I've heard about that. Hardware stores did too, didn't they? Didn't they even sell guitars and things like that in hardware stores back in the day?

Some hardware stores sold guns, and ammo. But I wasn't too up to speed on them selling guitars, etc., in them. Some of the bigger lock, and key stores sold firearms in them. There were two older gun, lock, and key stores in the old downtown Fort Lauderdale area. AA Lock and Gun, and Ideal Lock, and Gun. I really liked the old downtown areas, in place of the malls.

There''s a shop out in Texas somewhere that sells guns and musical gear, but I forget the name of it. Usually, you'd find that in pawn shops, with everything else they have. I know what you mean with the downtown shops instead of the mall, although both seem to be in peril these days because of the internet, unless they also sell online. I guess it depends on where you are and all of that. There's no mall around here, but there are a lot of shops that are still around. Although, a lot of them have came and went, too. There used to be at least four music stores around when I first moved here, now there are none. Well, there might be one still around, but they are more so in the next town, if they are still there.

I remember talking with you about the very popular local music shops that were around. Those local stores were great!

Yeah, I remember that. There were certainly plenty back in the day. It's kind of ironic that there's now a huge amount of bass gear around, especially with amps, than there was back then. A lot cheaper, too.
