I imagine that had to have been surreal. One day you were in some jungle in a war, then the next you were back in the States with people doing everyday normal stuff, in normal houses, cars, TV, and that sort of thing.

There really wasn't too much separation of the two.

Well, trying to get back on the original topic, how's the Ric still doing for you?

The Ric is doing fine. I still do believe it's the best suited 4003 for me I've had. It really is a nice change for a different bass to go to from the USA Geddy Lee Jazz. It's been here for a good bit, and can't foresee it going anywhere. No complaints.

Sounds good. 8) I noticed you've actually held on to it for a long time now, so maybe you've finally found the right basses for you. I know GAS can kick in and you want to change things out, though.

To be honest, if I had the ability to easily change out some of the stuff I do have, I would. Not necessarily because they're bad instruments, but my tastes have changed to where I'm just using only a few of the ones I have, and those are the short scale basses. Although, I still do pick up the Squier Jazz when I go upstairs for the night, since the neck isn't that much different than the short scales, just longer, but thin. The Peavey Zodiac actually has a decent neck on it, too. It's not too much different than the Jazz.

I might try getting some of those light gauge Dunlop flats on it and see how it plays, since I have some Fender rounds on it that I took from that Squier P Bass I had. If it works out, and I can get a decent setup on it without any of that buzz coming back, I might get into playing it more, despite it being long scale. It's a really beefy sounding bass.

It's ironic that we've somewhat both changed direction on long, and short scale basses. Myself, I'm feeling very comfortable playing at least my two long scales. Where as, you seem to be playing well with your short scales. No telling I guess. Image

I guess I got used to them from getting the violin bass and adapting to that. I also occasionally play guitar, so that does kind of help transitioning between those two. Plus, I often play in my office, which is really small, so the compact neck is a little easier to move around and not smack against the wall, or doorway. I suppose I could adapt back to long scale basses if I had to. I'd just do the same thing I did to get used to short scales, but in reverse.

I know for a bunch of years I went back, and forth. The long scales feel a bit better on my fingers.

Yeah, I don't think there's a one size fits all for a bass neck. It's really a personal thing. I love the sound of Precision Basses, but they do have wider necks on them, which could be problematic, if you're not used to that. In the same token, the neck on the violin bass might be too cramped, if you're used to a Precision Bass. It did take me some getting used to at first.

The 4003 Ric has a wide neck like a Precision, but it's more flat on the back of the neck. That makes it a bit more of a comfortable feel playing it for me. I can get a precision sound from the 4003 also.

The one thing that I've noticed with the Ric, you can get a variety of tones out of it. It seems to be quite versatile. I mean, look at the difference between Paul McCartney's tone and Chris Squire's tone, and they both used a Ric. I know at least one difference it that I'm sure Paul McCartney used flats, and I do know Chris Squire used Rotosound rounds, and of course, they both used different amplification, which I'm sure also factors in it, as well.

I still think at times McCartney used Nylons. Maybe not on his Ric, but you never know. Nylons can be deceptive, and will give a Flat strings sound. D'Addario ETB92 Nylons have that quality. D'Addario even states that the ETB92 Nylons will put out a Flat string sound.

I do know he used nylons on the Hofner, during the making of "Abbey Road," at least. There's photos with that bass that you can see that.

Abbey Road, The Beatles last album they recorded. I always thought he used Nylons on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". His bass lines sounded to me to be from Nylons.

Yeah, I know what you mean. He also used a Jazz Bass, but that might have been more so on the "White Album." I've watched a video that he did from Abbey Road around the time of his "Chaos And Creation In The Backyard" album, and he had a sunburst lefty Jazz in the rack with his other instruments. From what I understand, he's held on to all of his gear, even his first amp from when he first started, so that could be the same one used.
