Black powder was still used an accelerant for the 16 inch guns on the Iowa Class USS Battleship's. It took that large of an explosion to fire those big turret guns, 24 to 25 miles downrange.

Yeah, I'd also hate to be on the receiving end of that, too.

It was a 16" projectile, weighing in at about 2,300, to 2,700 pounds.

If that. The Battleship was more than a prestigious ship to send somewhere.

Which reminds me, when you were sent to Vietnam, how did they transport you over there, by transport ship, or one of those huge cargo planes? I imagine you must have came from the Pacific Ocean side to go there, since that was technically closer, than going across the Atlantic and going through Europe, and through Asia.

The DOD chartered the commercial airlines to fly troops to the west coast, then to Hawaii, then Viet Nam. It got the troops their faster than even the transport planes could do. The transports were doing more large equipment movements into SE Asia, and didn't facilitate as many troops with the cargo space needed.

I had a feeling that Hawaii would be a factor in that, because of the location. What about any bases in Japan, and I think there still was one in the Philippines at the time?

I never touched down in either of the two locations. We landed at Da Nang.

At least you made it back. Did you leave and go back the same way?

No, I went back by Military Transport, with a crunched up knee.
