I liked using the M14 over the M16-A1 for a battle rifle. The .308 Winchester round didn't skip off dense foliage like the the lighter .223 Remington cartridge.

I'm going back to a Remington 870 12 gauge pump shotgun for the defense of the realm here. It makes more sense than a hand gun. The old saying,......... "You don't argue with a shotgun!"

I think they were also having issues in Afghanistan with the 5.56mm, with certain situations with the buildings and certain ranges, so they broke out some of the M14s out of storage, and even updated them with new hardware, folding stocks, etc. I think the Navy has actually been using them for years, before that, though. Maybe the SEALs, too. I think they used them to detonate sea mines from their ships, or something like that.

When I used to work at KMart in the sporting goods department, they had a Mossberg 500 there that I had the keys for, locked up in the closet in the back room, with extra stock of shells, and other sporting goods. The ones in the display case were zip tied through the chamber, so you couldn't use them, unless you cleared that. I suppose if any crap broke bad when I was there, all I'd have to do is go through the door next to the counter, grab a box of .00 Buckshot, open the door, take it out of the box, load up, and go. That's of course, if I'm allotted enough time to go back there. It was way in the back of the store from the front end, though. Not the best self defensive scenario, but it's better than nothing, I suppose.

I'm thinking about keeping a box of 12 gauge, 3" Magnum rifled slugs for the first loading, if it comes to repel borders. An ounce of lead at 1,800 fps at the muzzle is pretty substantial.

12 Gauge is definitely devastating at close range. Let's just hope you'll never be in a situation to where you need to worry about it, but it's better safe than sorry, especially being in Florida, with the hurricanes and all of that can happen, with power outages, and people acting crazy because of it. You know I read an article one time about a group of either spec ops guys, or they might have being hired contractors, I forget, that were working for the military during the whole Hurricane Katrina disaster, and they said that was more scary than being in the Middle East during the war going on there. Imagine that, and this was on US soil, with no opposing armies with machine guns and rocket launchers.

After Andrew devastated the greater Homestead area of South Miami, There were people on cell phones calling 911 as they were being invaded for what little they had left. They were told, sorry we can't get to you, you're on your own. A lot of those folks had had no firearms to protect themselves. There were organized neighborhood patrols of the ones that had firearms. They were ready to shoot to kill looters. These people had nothing left.

I do have a box of Federal 12 GA., 450 GR. Hollow Point Sabot Slugs handy. And a few Federal 3 inch Magnum 00 Buck shells also. I will get a couple more boxes of shells.

Yes, I'm waiting for it to show up from the distributers. The Labor Day holiday put things back a couple of days ago. I've used a couple of Remington 870 pumps over the years. I did have a Mossberg 500 in 1970.

Did you ever use one in the service?

Yeah, I did. I used one several times when we were in mostly extremely thick brush. Once again, the 18 year olds didn't want to touch one. They worked a hell of a lot better than a rifle.

I suppose they were also controversial for military use, especially with politicians, which is ironic, considering they are the ones that have you sent there in the first place.

Not that I ever heard of. I used it, and didn't give a damn if anyone liked it, or not. Charlie didn't like a 12GA. TFB for Charlie.

Oh yeah,....... I did get the 870 today. I bought two boxes of Federal 00 Buck while I was there.

The funny thing about that place is they became more or less capitalistic, instead of communist, eventually. I guess wanting to make money became more of a priority than any of that Cold War BS. I suppose after the collapse of the Soviet Union, that was only a matter of time, and they also wound up going to war with China, after the US pulled out of there, so I guess that whole thing might have soured, too.

I'm having a Rock Island Armory Compact 1911 .45ACP coming in. I do well with a .45ACP. It's based on a Colt Series 70 action. I prefer the Series 70 Colt design, over the Series 80 Colt design.
